Road bike trailer ?

Both my husband and I have road bikes. Does anyone know if it is possible to hook a bike trailer onto our bikes?  Is it safe. Our baby is 3 months old now, I would think throwing her in a trailer in her car seat would probably be safer than driving.

Thanks.

  • We've been looking into this as well (actually DH is obsessed) and he really wants to get a Chariot.  They're a little spendy but everyone we know who has them loves them.  It will hook onto the back of any bike, and they have newborn insert that offers more support and keeps their head from moving too much.  REI sells them and I think they have a website as well.  You could also try looking on craiglist for a used one.  GL!!  I have a feeling there will be a Chariot in my garage soon, even though baby isn't due until November :)

BTW, DH is an avid road biker and plans to pull baby behind his road bike.

  • Ditto this.  My friends who took their small babies really liked the infant sling on the Chariot.  I'd probably want them in a helmet if you were on the road, and 3 months is too small.

Another option is to bungee the infant seat into a Burley.  It's worked well for some of my friends.

  • Thanks, I figure we would go slow, but probably still about 10 mph or so. I would want her to have some safety protection like a helmet or car seat.  This was very helpful.

  • I would definitely wait until your LO can wear a helmet, and she shouldn't wear a helmet until at least a year. Before then their necks really aren't strong enough to bear the extra weight of the helmet.
  • 3 months is way too early for a Chariot Carrier or any bike trailer for that matter.

I have never heard of any bike trailers in which you can use your infant car seat.  How would you secure it?  Rear-facing?

They say online that babies can be 6 months but I still think that is too early.  The bike specialist at REI told us 1 year when we got ours for DS1.  Of course we were so eager and starting using it at 6 months.

You will not find a helmet to fit properly.  The infant insert pushes baby's head alittle more forward and the helmet will do so even more.  It is not safe.

We rode on some bike trails when DS was still under a year and he would fall asleep and his head would be slumped over.  We had to stop every 5 minutes or so to readjust him.  And that was with the infant insert.

My best advice is to wait until your LO is older.  Closer to a year.  And this is coming from someone who jumped the gun and tried to go biking to soon with their LO.

  • I agree with this.  My daughter was not comfortable in the trailer with her helmet until she was about 18 months.  She also had some core strength issues.  My son seems to be a little better.  He's just a year.

I was just saying that I have had friends who have used their trailers (without helmets on bike trails as opposed to roads) earlier than a year.  They use bungee cords to keep the infant seat from wiggling around in the Burley.
