about ur own visits to doctors

Hey everyone! I have a question about your own appointments to doctors. Do you bring ur LO with you? I guess not everyone has or can afford babysitter so people do that, right?! I went to regular doctor with my 8-month old, but it was nearby and I went for a very quick visit(just about allergies). I have gastroenterologist and dermatologist appointments coming up this week and my MIL was supposed to watch him and got sick. I am thinking just go ahead and take him with and hope he is not going to cry(only if he is going to get sleepy, but he might) . What do you think?

Do you have a friend that could watch him for a brief time? I have brought them to doctor's visits when I've been in a bind but it hasn't been easy and every time I end up leaving thinking, I meant to ask about this or that but of course the kids were distracting. Sounds like you only have 1 so maybe it wouldn't be too bad, but if you ask a friend it would probably save you a lot of stress.

  • Yes I did take ds1 as an infant to short appointments. He took a paci and I brought toys. Usually the nurses and Drs enjoyed seeing him and sometimes he got a lot more attention than me.

  • I always take the girls.  They're well behaved and it just seems silly for DH to have to take time out of work when I can take them.  The only exception is the dentist.  He does come home a bit early for that one.

  • My DH works shift work, so I try to schedule things around his schedule.  I have had to go to the walk-in with all 3 though.  I try my best.

I have an appt Wed w/ a podiatrist and DH will keep the kids.  I have to because they are doing x-rays so I can't have a toddler who won't listen/sit still there for that.

  • I am pregnant with our third child, and I take my boys with me to my appointments.  I can't ever find anybody to watch them, so I've given up. Besides, the appts. are always about 10min. long, so it's not a big deal.  I bring them snacks and a drink to keep them occupied.

It's also all about time of day too.  I usually make my appts. in the morning right before lunch. So after the appt. I take them to Burger King as a special treat lunch for being good at the doctor's office.  It's working so far cause my appts. are only once a month. Not sure what I'll do when I start going once a week.  <: )

  • I bring my son (25 months old) to my OB appointments because they are short and he's pretty easily entertained. I always keep a stash of new little cheap toys (like $1 Target bin) and snacks/treats in my bag to keep him busy. The staff is really nice and always gives him a sticker and are sweet to him.

I had a babysitter for my longer first visit that involved my pap/bloodwork/etc but it snowed that day and they rescheduled me for the following day when she wasn't available! So I even took him to that....less than ideal but it worked out ok.

To other specialties though, I wouldn't bring him - I'd make sure DH was available or a friend or get a sitter.....unless it was just a short follow up with the dermatologist or something. Definitely wouldn't bring him to a first visit with a doctor, a specialist who I may need to talk to at length, or the dentist!

  • I don't bring mine because it's just a huge PITA IMO.  Usually my dh takes off a few hours so I can go.  My neighbor has watched ds for me before too.

If I know they are going to be short (OB), I will take my daughter and if I am in a total bind my son, too. Anything longer than 20 min, I try to find someone to watch them. Just for my own sanity.
  • I have no choice but to take them. Sometimes they are very well behaved and sometimes its a PITA but we all make due. I have learned that I cannot stress and rush things. I always bring a drink and snacks and some toys.

  • I took DS#1 to ALL of my pre-natal appointments for DS#2.  I didn't have anyone else to watch him.  It was fine.  I haven't really had to go to the dr. since then.

  • Thank you so much for the advice!!! I will have to take him with me this week, but for the future I will try not to. I just thought its like rude to doctor's or something like that. I hope we'll be fine.
  • It depends on what doctor, what I have to do , etc.

For my primary, no. They are not a "kid-friendly" doctor, and so I get a friend or my babysitter to watch the kids.

For my OB, I will bring them if I have no one to watch......

It's hard to bring 3 kids to the doctor though - it's a lot of kids.

An 8-month old can be contained in an infant seat or stroller, so it's a bit easier to bring one along.
