bfing and af ??

weird I know but I just got my first real period after having J and my bm supply has totally tanked.  I pump after 4 hours and pretty much get nothing.  I was pumping every 6 hours and getting about 8oz now I'm lucky if I get 6.  To add insult to injury J just started drinking 6 oz bottles at a time so now I've had to pull into my freezer stash and even use formula.  Has this happened to anyone else?  I'm taking fenugreek now in hopes that it helps.

Re: bfing and af ??

  • I think I've heard from others that while they are on their period their supply goes down, but then once af stops, it goes back to normal. I never got mine until I stopped bfing, so I do not know from experience. I'd just keep pumping and hopefully when af stops you're supply will be back to normal. You could also contact a lactation consultant. Good Luck!

  • I never got AF while I was pumping...  I was super lucky in that department - I didn't get AF until 9 or so months with M.  I just had my first with W.

I will say, though....I know they say water supply doesn't affect pumping, but I sure noticed a dip when I wasn't drinking enough - so do your Fenugeek, but don't forget your water if you're not drinking enough.

Also - if you're serious about continuing to pump and really just can't get much of a supply, you might consider Domperidone.

    You're awesome Tiff...keep at it.

  • It should come back when your period is over.   Try drinking gatorade... that really worked better than Fenugreek for me.

Yup. Happened to me. I'm one of the unlucky ones who got AF by 5 months. Supply tanked, but came back after AF went away. Just stay hydrated and use your stash or formula.

  • I was told by my lc, that not only does supply decrease but that the milk takes on a metallic taste that sometimes causes the baby to not want to eat. I hope af isn't too awful to you.
