Hi, I have been testing my blood sugar now for little over a week. I've had a few high readings were I thought I had ate a safe amount of carbs. On both occasions it was my lunch reading and I had not had a snack since breakfast and was eating lunch late.
I called my diabetic counselor and found her pretty unhelpful, she said it was only what I ate that influenced the number. However, after reading several posts on here I've seen dehydration, stress and lotions, etc. on my hands could affect the reading.
I saw my ob today and she was not concerned since over 80% of my readings were within my range. But, I'd just like to get a better understanding of what's going on. Any thoughts?
Thanks!
Re: GD - Abnormal spikes after waiting too long to eat
When you do not eat anything for a few hours your body will release glucagon from your liver to naturally keep your BS from falling too low. The best thing is to eat some sort of protein (cheese, PB, etc) in between long periods of no food (4 plus hours) to keep your body fueled.
Hang in there, I know it can be frustrating
I definitely found that if I went to long without eating anything and then had a carb sensible lunch my numbers would be high.
When I discussed my numbers with my nutritionist and she asked about a high number and I explained that it was because I missed my snack and had lunch late she was then not surprised that the number was high.

My dietician told me to make sure I don't go more than 4 hours without eating, as this can affect your readings. Sometimes it's difficult because I'm not hungry during snacktimes, so I'll drink milk for a snack or something.
And yes, having something on your hands can affect your readings. Make sure you wash your hands before you test.
This. Since you've only been on this for a week it will be a bit of trial and error to understand how your body works. When I first started I was told to have one morning snack, 2 afternoon, and 1 nighttime. That meant I was usually going about 3 hours in between each snack. I realized my body couldn't handle that and I started snacking about every 1.5-2 hours but in smaller portions. That kept me satiated so I wasn't starving by mealtime. I also noticed that eating fruit for lunch can usually spike my numbers (especially apples) so I avoid fruit during lunchtime. So just things like that will help you to figure out what you can and can't eat and do. GL!
