Baby Names

WDYT? A few new ones for me...Fox, Crew, Veda, Vida.

I came across these names in the last few weeks, and they are really growing on me. What is the general consensus on these?

Fox- Obviously, I know it's an animal. Lol. I find it really charming, maybe because I think of "You've got Mail". We are really digging Arlo Fox.

Crew- I certainly see the J.Crew thing, and I am a little unsure if this is a real name or not, but it's creeping up on me. It's preppy sounding, which certainly fits my DH (He is from Connecticut), but is it weird?

Veda- I've actually loved this name since I was a kid because "My Girl" was my favorite movie. Does it sound dated? And with our last name being close to Valentine  is that ugly?

Vida- Just watched "Mildred Pierce" and her daughter's name was Vida and I really like it. I'm spanish, so I also really like that it means "life".

Alright, let me have it!

  • Fox reminds me of Youve got mail too, but thats not a bad thing. I think its cute depending on which name you put with it. I would use Fox, but I have a fear of naming a child Fox and he turns out to be not quite as cute as his name. Just saying. I love love love Crew and it was on our list for a long time. Im not a fan of Vida or Veda....I like Vera much better.

  • Love Veda! I like Crew.

Agree with all your comments. I'm excited to see what else you come up with!

  • Fox- I don't like it as a first name, but I don't mind it as a middle name and think Arlo Fox goes well together.  As far as animal names go, it could be worse (Bear).

Crew- I'm not a fan.  And I know two little boys named Crew in Austin.  One Crew, one Cru (vom).

Veda- NMS, but not bad. I don't know that I can get behind Veda Valentine.

Vida-  makes me think of Matthew McC (his daughter is Vida, I believe).  Very pretty and I like the meaning for you, but again, the VV thing is throwing me.  I think it could work, though.

  • I really really love Milo Fox.

Crew is just okay for me. Not horrible, not good though.

Veda totally reminds me of "My Girl," and I loved that movie so Yes from me.

Vida, I've never heard of, but I think it's really pretty especially since you're Spanish.

I love this name but it may come off as porn star-ish with your last name.

  • Your girl names are okay.. NMS, but okay.   But Fox and Crew?  I think you're really reaching.

Picture your child as a 30 year old professional.  To me, they sounds pretty silly on an adult.  And remember, you're naming a human, not a pet dog.  Save Fox and Crew for your next black lab or something.   If you have to try and justify it as a name, it's probably not a good choice.

I am most definitely aware that it is a human and that it will be a professional one day. I met a man named Fox a few weeks ago (In his late 30's, a lawyer ) and really liked it the more I said it. I have researched it a little and found it to not be an uncommon name and has been around since the 1600's, so I'm not sure I'm reaching on that one. It's just not very popular and wanted to see what people's natural reaction to it is.

That said, I really don't see how a person would be hindered by the name Fox or Crew...They seem perfectly normal names, I'm just unsure on if I like them enough to keep on the list. I'm sure these aren't everyone's style, but I guarantee you that I do think about names with a person in mind. I'm not picking "Fluffy" "Tweety" "Clover" or "Spot"...LOL.

  • Fox- No

    Crew- No way

    Veda- eh..

    Vida- No

  • Fox - interesting. I would only use it if it had some connection or meaning for you, though. "Fox" is a slang term referring to sexiness or wiliness and as you know, it's an animal.

Crew - A style of haircut. A sport. A name for a group of workers. Etc. This word is a noun that has so many non-related name meanings that I would nix it.

Veda - pretty but not a fan of Veda Valentine.

Vida - I like this name the best. Very pretty, just again, not a fan of it paired with your ln.

Fox - Very odd to me. Sounds like labeling your child as very good looking (He's a fox.) Also just one vowel change away from the F word, which I'm sure kids will pick up on.

Crew- Yes Not bad unless he rows crew. Crew, the sport, is very popular here.

Veda - Sounds like someone with an accent saying Vader to me, as in Darth "Veda". How about Vera as an alternative?

    Vida - Yes

  • I actually like Fox as a MN which surprises me. Animal names are usually a big no-go for me. (I freaking hate bird names). I think it would be ok as a FN too, but Arlo Fox just sounds way cool.

Crew: ...eh...it reminds me of Tom Cruise. who wants to be reminded of that guy?

Veda and Vida don't really do too much for me, and I think you're right that they won't sound the best with your last name.

I like your out-of-the-box list. I get so tired of seeing the same names over and over. Most of these missed the mark for me, but I look forward to seeing more names that you come up with.

Bwahahaha. I seriously laughed when you mentioned the Cruise. That's exactly how I felt after a friend named her kid Maverick! Lol.

Out of all of them, I think Arlo Fox is def. being added to the list. We think it sounds pretty cool. If I was a guy, I'd like the name! It's not for everyone, but I like that about it :)

To me, those two male names just don't sound sophisticated for an adult.  Even if they've been around for centuries and you know someone with them, they're kind of nickname-ish.   But you wanted opinions....  I'm a traditionalist!

The only one I like is Vida.. the others don't seem like names to me.  The preppy association with Crew is def. NMS
