ethan and the dentist :(

I took ethan to the dentist today.  He did awesome and let her brush his teeth.   He has 3 cavities :(  I am devasted.  He has to have them filled at children's hospital and be under anestheia.  I am so upset.  The worst thing to give kids is fruit snacks, raisins and gummy things.  Ethan lived on raisins and fruit snacks for a year.

  • Oh no!  I'm so sorry.  That worries me...we're just now making Gavin's first dentist appt and while he doesn't eat fruit snack or gummy things, he does love raisins! :(

Oh no, I'm sorry!  He will be ok and it will be over soon.

This just reminds me that I need to be way better about brushing DDs teeth...we're really slacking in that dept.

  • :-(  I hate taking the kids to the dentist.  Ty has a dark spot that might be turning into a cavity, so I got the gum/gummy/juice/sippy lecture.  Of course, sippy cups are a car only thing in my house so I hate that part of it.  I KNOW sippies are bad for kids' teeth so that part just bugs the crap out of me.  And I don't give the kids gummies, but Grandma bribes them with gummies so that is a sour point as well.  Then I have to try to explain why I wont let my kids' baby teeth rot out of their head like she did hers.

I hope it goes well for Ethan!

  • Oh wow.. That's terrible.  (and also sounds expensive!!) I'm sorry. Where did you take him? Don't feel bad though.. TONS of kids eat gummies all the time.. In fact, I would give them to Eve all the time if she'd eat them, but she gags on them.

That stinks. Hopefully it will be a quick, easy procedure for him. I am a brushing maniac whenever he has anything gummy. It's not the easiest thing to get him to cooperate at the dentist, so I don't want to add to the craziness.

Awww...poor guy! I bet he will do just fine but the stress must be awful for you! That would break my heart.

Good to know about the gummies/raisins. I never would have thought about that!!

  • Whoa! I had no idea they would put the kiddos under anesthesia for a cavity. Poor E! This was a real wake up call for me to make sure to brush J's teeth better.

  • Poor thing! Not fun at all! Don't beat yourself up... You live and learn. Anything that sits on the teeth for a long time are cavity causing... Think gooey, sticky, chewy. It's all about exposure. It's better to gobble a pound of plain chocolate in 2 minutes than one lollipop for 30 min. The best thing for them to drink is milk and water... Sipping juice all day is bad news for teeth. And never put a little one to bed with a bottle of milk or juice.. Only water. As a side note... One of the most anti cavities foods... Is cheese. It helps stimulate saliva.... And helps neutralize the ph in your mouth to help prevent decay!

This is all good to know.  E is obsessed about brushing his teeth (we finish to be thorough).  I would not have thought that raisins would be so bad.  He has not had them yet, but I was thinking that we would give him some soon.
