Stay at Home Moms

If you take vacations w/o your LO's

Who watches them?  I'm finding this to be quite a challenge being a SAHM and not having day care to rely on during the day.  My sister works for a day care and we can use them on occasion but because its an in home day care they can only take so many kids and if they are full they can't take our boys while we are gone.  My parents work full time and both boys together are too much for MIL.

  • When we travel, we split the time between my parents and in-laws.

  • This is the reason we don't take vacations without our LOs.

My parents are retiring in less than a year and are moving a lot closer to us.  Maybe then.

  • Well, if it were to happen ds would stay with my parents but we could only do that for a weekend really since they both still work.  I enjoy vacations with him though, and we can't afford multiple vacations a year so the option of taking some with him, some without, is not one we have.

  • We mostly have left them with my parents, but my mom recently had surgery, so we looked into hiring DD's prek teacher to stay with them for the weekend.  He charges about $175 a day, so not cheap, but for a weekend away, it could be worth it.  He is a certified teacher and the kids love him.  He knows our community well and has taken the kids for full days many times.  He is the sort of sitter who takes them out and about and does things with them like parks, out for pizza, to visit friends, as well as, arts and crafts, which I like.  Most things they do are within walking distance, but if I left them for the weekend, I would be comfortable with him driving my car.  (He has a car, but it is older and I am more comfortable with the safety of my own car.)
  • The last time we went away, we split them between two of my brothers.  One SIL is a teacher and it was during the summer.  My other SIL is home.  Both families have older kids (the youngest is 10 or 11) and they are super excited to watch our kids

  • I'm jealous. I WISH we had family that could watch our kids. My parents don't drive, so even if they were to come and watch the kids, they'd be stuck indoors the entire time, which would not make for a good mix.

We have only done weekend trips away from the kids-usually Th-Sunday. Both sets of our parents are close and are willing to watch them. We have 4 weekend trips coming this summer, so we are trying to split the time. My ILs travel a lot, so sometimes it is hard to coordinate.

We don't take a lot of vacations without the kids but if we do need to go somewhere (usually to pick up a piece of equipment such as a truck) during the school year, the kids will stay part of the time with my mom and part of the time with IL's (since they live near the school).  Otherwise my mom will take them the whole time.

  • My parents. I'm so lucky that they are both retired and they both actually enjoy babysitting. I have 3 kids so that's saying a lot!

  • Either my parents or my in laws watch the kids.  My parents retired about 2 years ago and my MIL retired last year.  My parents have watched the kids a lot, my MIL first time watching them will be next month.

This, except we split the time between my parents and my aunts. My FIL is useless.

My mom usually does it but she's a realtor and my dad works shift work so between them they can make it work in their schedules. My MIL has done it but like you said, it's a bit much for her as she is retired, but much older and so 2 toddlers could be a bit much.
  • My ILs usually...though my mom (who lives across the country) has flown in to watch DD1 while we went to an OOT family wedding.

We have another family wedding this summer and my ILs will be going with us, + my parents will be in Europe visiting family.... so, DH's cousin (senior in HS) and aunt will be staying at our house and watching the girls for the weekend.

We've never left them for longer then a weekend. I just think that at this age, it's a lot for my ILs or my mom to handle...I'm looking forward to the girls being a little older so that DH and I can go on a nice week-long beach vacation ;)

  • The first time DH and I took a vacation without Emily was when she was 2 years old.  My mom came to visit for the vacation so Emily could be here, in her familiar environment.

She has come ever year and taken care of Emily for the week so we could get away and celebrate our anniversary.  :)

With baby #2 due next month, it's probably going to be at least 2 years before we can leave them both with my mom for a solo vacation.
