So apparently for exclusively breastfed babies, they should start having vitamin D drops according to our pediatrician. Even if the mother takes the vitamin herself, it doesn't get absorbed in the breast milk.
We had picked up the Enfamil drops a few weeks ago, after our pediatrician recommended starting drops after our 2 week visit. That's the brand Walgreens had and we didn't think anything of it, til we went home. I looked at the ingredients on the box. A few ingredients I don't even know plus artificial color and flavor. WTF. Why a baby needs artificial color and flavor I'll never know. Plus it's a big dropper and I imagine LO spitting up half of it.
I returned it and instead, got the Carlson Labs one. One single clear drop, the bottle lasts an entire year and there are no ingredients other than vitamin D and coconut oil. Anyway, just sharing if anyone still needs to buy drops. I got it at Vitamin Shoppe.
Re: Recommended Vitamin D
This goes against everything I read and what my MW told me. If the mother is deficient then there isn't enough vitamin D in the breastmilk. If the mother is taking enough supplements or has enough exposure to the sun the baby should get enough from the breast milk. I take 2,000IU daily and studies have shown that this level will provide the right amounts for my baby in my breast milk.
my peds recommended vit D drops because we live in maine and the sun isn't out for much of the year. babies get some from their mother but not enough in cold climates. I figure it can't hurt her and we'll do whatever we can to make her healthy.
you can also get the Carlson drops from whole foods. that's where we got them after she was born
Our GP recommends the drops for EBF babies. Because DD is primarily FF (with a little BM) she doesn't need the drops.
I know you can get the brand "D Drops" in Canada, I don't know if they have it in the States too. They have drops for babies as well as adults. I'm looking into the adult ones for DH and I when our jar is done.
