another question about seven hills

Sorry this may be a stupid question but what are the main differences between seeing the midwives or the doctors?  I typically saw the nurse practicioner at my current practice but a doctor delivered DS.  Can a midwive deliver by themselves or does a doctor need to be present?  I am considering giving them a call but I am not sure who I want to request to see.

 Thanks!

Re: another question about seven hills

  • I see the MW's at 7 Hills.  I had a great experience!  Sue Holden delivered my son and there was not a doctor present.  I believe that as long as there are no complications, the MW will deliver the baby themselves.  A doctor did need to stitch up my 3rd degree tear but that was it.

I rotated through all the MW's during my pregnancy but Sue was on call when I went into labor and I see her now for my annuals as well.  I really like her.  She takes time to listen to my questions and concerns.

  • Midwives can do pretty much everything an OB can except surgery (c-section). My midwives did my delivery, did my stitches, were able to order any and all meds (pitocin, epidural, cervadil, etc.) They can write prescriptions, order ultrasounds, evaluate ultrasounds. Basically an OB wouldnt be needed unless an emergent c-section happened. I know they are also trained to use the vaccum and forceps but I didn't need either of those but my friend who used the group of midwives I see did end up needing that. This may vary from practice to practice but I see a group of ONLY midwives and this is what they do-- the Seven Hills midwives may do things differently since they work in tandem with OB's.

  • Ditto PP's. Also, you must be considered low risk in order to deliver with a midwife.

The biggest reason I prefer a midwife delivery is b/c they tend to provide more individual, less routine care. For example, they tend to be there with/for you throughout the duration of your labor (unlike most obstetricians, who merely step in for the last push). Also, in general, midwives have a lower rate of section births. Again, in general, they allow much more time (and employ/exhaust many more techniques, with fewer interventions) before turning you over to an obstetrician (only if necessary). In fact, this was my experience with J's birth. My midwife *fought off* one of the OB/GYN's in the practice, who was circling like a hawk and (seemingly) giving her a pretty hard time about giving me as much time as she did. I pushed for over two hours (with a few breaks); but, with her (and my amazing L&D nurses) help, I was able to reposition J in the canal and deliver vaginally. If she had not been there to advocate for me, I still believe that I would've wound up in the OR.
