my pregnancy has turned into a vegetarian

Eating has been stressing me out. nothing taste good and I cant keep anything down. Im really sensitive to the texture of food, I did not think morning sickness could make you feel so horrible. My fiance is always wanting to grill steaks but for some reason it never sounds good to eat even the smell. Bacon is the worst, he loves it but as soon as I start cooking it my gag reflexes start again. I just dont understand the thought of meat and trying to eat it is so off putting. It makes my stomach is uneasy. Chicken is a little easier for me but it still makes me feel sick. Has anybody of crazy changes in their diet? I'm really worried that I might not be getting enough protein in my diet.

  • Most foods have been grossing me out too... but I'm a bad person to ask about meat, as I've been a vegetarian for years.  You do need to get your protein now more than ever though, so if meat isnt appetizing for you, definitely work on getting protein from other sources (legumes, eggs, etc).  At my last appt, I asked if it was ok for me to drink protein shakes to make sure that I'm getting enough protein and the doc said yes, as long as it's 100% whey protein and just to double check the ingredient list (for bad sweeteners, etc).

With both of my pregnancy's I have hated all types of meat. I'm usually a chicken lover and can eat it for every meal but I just can't deal with chicken or steaks or any kind of meat when I'm pregnant. It's been very hard finding things to eat :(

  • Before this pregnancy I was a red meat and potatoes type of girl. Now? Blech. I'm getting my protein from beans, chobani yogurt, cheese, and peanut butter whenever I can stomach it. The only meat I have been eating is the bits of chicken in Campbell's chicken noodle soup.
  • what kind of protein are you taking? could you give an idea of what your daily meals look like.

  • yeah my fiance and I were so used to eating that way. but now its super hard and he thinks Im weird and doesnt understand why the thought of meat makes me sick.

  • WARNING - lots of food talk - don't read if your overly nauseous

    Protein Sources:

Peanut butter is a good source of protein and I've been doing a lot of PB toast in the mornings (when I'm not too nauseous for breakfast, that is).  Someone else mentioned greek yogurt - which is another good protein source.  I've been eating a lot of lentils (Trader Joes sells them packaged so that they are pretty much prepared for anything)... cold on a salad, in curries, soups/stews, etc.  A couple times a week, I've been making protein shakes w/ whey protein powder, ice cream and milk blended together (just like a milkshake).  I've never been a huge fan of whole wheat, but am trying to use wheat breads, whole wheat pastas, etc. because they have a higher protein count and it's a fairly easy substitution to make.  Eggs have been turning my stomach this week, but last week, I had deviled eggs w/ my lunch on 2 days to help increase my protein intake.  A lot of people find tofu gross, but some of the flavored ones are actually good (my meat-eating husband will even happily eat the terriyaki flavored tofu) mixed in w/ a veggie stir fry.  The other thing that is good and easy is to do Mexican for dinner (which we did a couple times this week) and use refried beans in whatever you make.

Here's a good article w/ some other ideas about where to find protein until you're ready to go back to eating meat: https://www.vegetariantimes.com/2007/pdf/vegetarian_starter_kit.pdf

  • I am having the same problem! I don't want any meat at all. I have always eaten chicken at least one meal a day, and I don't think I've had any in at least 6 weeks. I would much rather just stick to fruits and veggies. The thought of meat just grosses me out now.

This is me exactly!  It doesn't help the situation that dh is a butcher lol.  I've been eating lots of nuts and string cheese to try and get enough protein.  At this point, it's about all I can do.  Oh, and shellfish always sounds good, but dh isn't a huge fan of that.

  • I have kidney issues and was told to make sure my protein intake was not much more than 60 grams a day.  I think it's recommended for pregnant women to take it a little more than that.  But, let me tell you, if you are a meat eater, you are probably eating TONS more than the recommendation even.  I found it impossible to eat any meat in a day and stay under 60g.  Even without meat, I usually went over.  Our society eats WAY more protein than we need, so I wouldn't worry.

I found this website to track my eating, which helped me understand where my nutrition really was: https://www.livestrong.com/myplate/

  • I also involuntarily became a vegetarian. Meat makes me sick, especially bacon which makes me sad because i use to love it.  So far i've been eating like a 5 year old, apple sauce, fruit, cold cereal, ice cream, etc. Can't wait until i can go back to normal foods.

  • Try eating Greek Yogurt. There is tons of protein in a single serving. I eat Chobani Greek yogurt. The flavored ones have about 14 grams of protein and the vanilla have about 22 grams! Try sweetening the vanilla with some honey... it's delicious!

  • I too seem to have become a vegetarian in my pregnancy. Except...I don't eat vegetables.    Meat totally grosses me out.    Even chicken, which has always been a main staple in my diet.

And the smells of it cooking...ugh!!!   My husband is suddenly cooking all this incredibly strong smelling stuff several times a day. Bacon,  maranated chicken, sausage....ugh!     I'm just like, "OMG, why are you doing this to me???"    He's just like, "Oh, sorry."

I'm there too. I generally eat lots of fish, but it is really grossing me out now, and last night I could barely choke down a few bites of pork tenderloin.  Chicken sounds disgusting. I just want fruit & veggies.

  • Lots of people have meat aversions, so you aren't alone- you could try some greek yogurt or nuts for your protein instead.

I wouldn't dare try to cook bacon myself right now- blech!
