LO is 5 weeks today and I feel like I should have more milk in storage by now. Some ladies talk about having hundred of oz stored...I only have 45oz. How can I build up my supply so I can store more?
Right now LO is eating around 25oz a day and I am able to pump just above that so I usually store one feeding each day. I typically double pump about 6 times a day. Once in the morning about 30 mins and I get around 10oz, 3 times at work 20ish mins each and I get about 8oz, then 2 times after I get home from work 30 mins each (I work long hours so I'm there longer than at home) and that only gets me another 8 oz. Sometimes I get a bit more and that's when I can store a few oz.
My concern is that if LO starts eating more then how will I keep up and also maintain a freezer supply. I am not sure if I can add another pumping session in there. 3 is about all I can do at work and when I get home LO wants so much attention that 2 is sometimes hard, DH works nights so he isn't around to give me a break. Any suggestions?
Re: EPers building a supply
If you are pumping more than your LO eats you're already building, just keep doing what you are doing. Babies eat roughly the same amount from ages 1month - 6 months, they just break it down differently (i.e. start out eating 2 oz ever 2 hours, then when they get bigger tummies can go 3 oz every 3 hours). Your baby is still pretty young, you're ahead of lots of moms with the freezer stash. I have 1300 oz, but that's because so I can stop pumping and still have a month or so to go. Determine what you want/need, if it's just backup you're probably on the right track, I wouldn't tie myself to the pump any more than you need to.
