Cloth Diapering

CD help

Hi - I'm due in August, and I am considering using the disposable inserts with gdiapers or flips.  I don't have a W/D in my apt, so full CD seems like too much work and laundry.  I am thinking that the disposable inserts for the flips or gdiapers may be the best option to avoid all the garbage associated with regular disposables.  Cost isn't an issue for us.  Any thoughts/suggestions? TIA

Re: CD help

  • I know you said cost isn't an issue....but using a hybrid like flips or gdiapers with only disposable inserts is quite a bit more than just traditional diapers.

Also....there will still be laundry with any cloth option.  The liners and covers will need to be washed.  Obviously it isn't as much, but there's still some.

I wouldn't recommend flushing them, even though they claim you can.  They've been known to cause some serious plumbing issues.  As far as less garbage, unless you compost them yourself, they will be sitting in the landfills along with all the other diapers.

I don't mean to sound like a negative nelly, just want to make sure you know what you're getting into before making the investment.

Plus, you'll still need to do laundry when the g-diapers/flips inevitably leak.

I tried gdiapers with the disposable inserts for about a month .....and was not a fan. They leaked pretty much every single time so I had to wash the cover and liner every time we changed (just like cloth). And not only did they leak into the cover but also onto LOs clothes, etc. More laundry. I also tried to flush the "flushable" inserts. Big fail. Clogged our plumbing and our landlord was not happy when he found inserts (he though they were wipes) in our pipes. So, while gdiapers may seem like a happy medium, I found that they were way more trouble and money than they were worth.

We've since made the switch to cloth and I'm doing maybe 3 extra loads of laundry a week, which doesn't really bother me. But we have a washer and dryer in our house. If we didn't, I'm not sure how comfortable i'd be doing the diaper laundry in a communal laundry room.

  • Thanks for all the info!  I'm looking for honest opinions.  I don't mind a little extra laundry.  However, doing laundry every other day (as most CD websites recommend) is just too much without a W/D in my apt.  I don't have easy access to composting sites since I live in the middle of Manhattan.  We would need to drag all of our garbage on the subway to do this.  Would using organic/green disposable diapers be the better way to go?  I try to decrease our footprint as much as possible, and I would would like to decrease LO's exposure to the chemicals in conventional diapers.
  • What about a diaper service.  If money isn't an obstacle you could use pre-folds and covers and not have to worry about washing the pre-folds, just the covers. There are also some diaper services where I live that will wash your diapers for you.  You leave the dirties our for pick-up and they leave you cleans.  I would think that this might be an option for you.

This. I bet you can find some awesome diaper services in NYC that will either provide prefolds and covers OR wash your own stash which, as baby gets older and you want to branch out from prefolds (which is a great option in the newborn stage) would be easier for you. There is a service where I live (in Texas) that offers this, so I assume that NYC can offer more. :)

  • I just wanted to say good for you for trying (I'm not sure I would even consider it without a W/D) and GL!!!!!
