How much does your LO sleep during the day?

My son wakes up and eats every 2-3 hours during the day. But i feel like he is only awake for a short while, then gets really fussy for a while and goes right back to sleep. I barely get any "awake happy time" with him. (Also he's sleeping well at night, about 3-4 hr stretches) So during the day he is either, nursing, sleeping, or crying...??Anyone have a similar LO? He is almost 8 wks old, i thought he would be awake more by now.

  • That pretty much sounds like my daughter, who will be 8 weeks on Wednesday. She has a few days here and there where she'll be awake longer, but for the most part she eats, sleeps, and fusses. Except when I need to get something done, then she wants to be awake forever!

  • Mine was like that too until about a week ago.  Now she's only sleeping maybe 3 hours during the day, which doesn't seem like very much to me, but it's working.  For a few days she only took one 2-3 hour nap.  Now she's splitting it up a bit more.  I just follow her cues and let her dictate.  Her awake time is gradually becoming more content, before she was fussy when awake more often than not.

  • After his 6 week growth spurt, LO stopped napping as much. I wouldn't say he really has a schedule, but usually he doesn't nap more than a couple hours a day. He is obviously tired, but he fights sleep and won't nap, and then he ends up being really fussy!

this is my LO to a tee.  not gonna complain though as his sleep means my sleep/time to get stuff done.

  • Sounds exactly like my DD. She sleeps at night and yet naps almost all day as well. She sleeps, eats, plays for a very short time and then sleeps again. She has periods of crying and usually one time a day where she manages to stay awake for two hours in one go, but that's it. Happy floor time doesn't last long before she needs another nap :)

  • I wish my LO would actually nap during the day. He takes cat naps of maybe 20 minutes and then he is up wanting to see whats going on. He is very alert for most of the day. Its sort of tiresome because I feel like I'm constantly on the move with him, bouncey seat to playmat to crib to car seat. The only solid hour nap I will get is if I take him for a long walk. He sleeps 6-7 hour stretches at night though so I can't complain too much. But I feel totally wiped out by the time my H comes home.
  • I actually plan to bring this up at our next appointment. DS rarely sleeps more than an accumulative 3 hours during the day and is up and down all night long. I doubt he gets more than a total of 11 hours in a 24 hr period
