This may seem like a stupid question but here goes..... can you stop BF and start again after a little while?
Background info: DS has acid reflux and on recommendation by our family doctor I switched to EPing and bottle feeding (one of the reasons why we switched to a pedi). However, I was not producing anywhere near enough milk for him. The pumping was stressing me out and I decided to stop. Now I am regretting it because DS's reflux is getting better (finally, after upping his dose of meds) and I wish I could BF him.
So my question is, is it possible to start BFing him after stopping? Any advice/experiences you can provide me with would be greatful as we won't be going back to the doctor for a few weeks.
side note: I also have a prescrption for domperidone if that would help jump start things? I don't know, I am kinda lost on this issue!
Re: Anyone stop BF and successfully start again? Kinda long...
Adoptive mothers can breastfeed, so you can too. It will be very hard though, but as long as you're willing to push through, I'm sure you'll be successful.
I have a book by Dr. Jack Newman (Canada's leading BFing expert) - it has a chapter specifically about this. I'd try to pick it up at the library/Chapters and see what it says. https://www.chapters.indigo.ca/books/Dr-Jack-Newmans-Guide-Breastfeeding-Jack-Newman-pitman/9780006394457-item.html?ikwid=dr+jack+newman&ikwsec=Books
I'd also contact a LC, LLLC, and post on the BFing board like suggested by all the pp's!! Good luck!!
I stopped putting DD at the breast b/c my supply was (still is really) crap. I would pump and bottle feed her what BM I could express and then supplement with formula. For the most part DD drinks formula, but at about 5 weeks (when she got sick) I started putting her on the breast when she was fussy to calm her down.
Now I put her to the breast at least 3 times a day if not for a little bit before every feed that I'm at home for. I'm really lucky that DD will go from the paci to the bottle to the breast and back with no problems. At the start she had a horrible time with switching b/c she was such a lazy/sleepy eater.
I am also on the highest dose of Domperidone to help give me some breast milk. I'm one of the unfortunate ones that just has a near non-exsistant supply to begin with, but for some friends even a low dose of Dom helped with their supply 100%.
I started by offering DD the breast after she had drank a little bit of the bottle. Then she wasn't starving and was a little more relaxed. Then she'd drink as much as she could/wanted and I would offer the rest of the bottle. Now I offer the breast before the bottle and she drinks as much as is there, and then I offer the bottle. If she's not in the mood for the breast then I just give her the bottle, that way it's not frustrating for either of us, and I know how much she's eating.
