baby gate location?

On a tri level house, with 6 stairs up, and 6 down, where would you put baby gates? 4 gates seems excessive. Top of basement stairs, and bottom of bedroom level stairs? The basement will be his play room, but he'll be able to crawl around upstais too. I'm sure I'm overthinking things, but I want to order what we need before we move into our new house next month Wink

Re: baby gate location?

  • I would do them all until you feel comfortable with him being able to navigate stairs on his own.

  • We only have a gate at the top of the stairs, but L is never, ever downstairs alone because our basement isn't too kid friendly. But if she'd been able to roam around down there at any point I would have put a gate at the bottom too.

If he will have access to all stairs, at any point, I would get four gates. They are so fast once they are mobile. If he plays in the basement area, then you need one at the top and bottom (same goes for upstairs).

  • we had 1 and moved it to what ever room we were in.  So if we were in the lower level we put the gate up at the bottom of that level and when we were upstairs we put it at the top but when we were in the middle level we put it at the end of the hallway that lead to the stairs so he would never have to go near the stairs.

I assume it's a pressure gate that you toted around?   I caution against a pressure gate at the top of the stairs because they can push it through and fall anyway.

Kinda, but it had brackets that we had mounted in each location.  So we kinda "locked" it in to the mounts, and then it had a door that swung open.  It's hard to explain but it's something my DH rigged up because  we have a wider stair case than needed and had to special orders so didn't want to special order 6 gates.

Sounds liek that would be easier to move around too than tightening up a pressure gate over and over.  Handy DH!  :)
