Dead gopher for breakfast

DH phones me at 6:45 and says, sorry, forgot to pull the garbage bin out, can you do it. Oh, and by the way, when I was driving by your van, there was a magpie on top your van and left you a present. You might want to grab a plastic bag and some gloves. So, because our lovely garbage guys do our street first, I jump out of bed, throw clothes on and run outside. I see something on top my van, right smack in the middle. Flippin' magpie left me a half eaten gopher. I guarantee that at least two of my neighbors were watching and chuckling over breakfast watching me try and get this stupid thing off my van. Ick! Gee, thanks DH.

And I did not take a pic...ewwwwww.

Re: Dead gopher for breakfast

  • Awesome!  He was just trying to share!

We have a family of magpies that have nested in the trees right behind our house.  They do not like me when I weed the yard.   Loud cawing, wing flapping and generally angry behavior.   Plus, they've scared off all the "nice" birds, like bluebirds!

  • What a very generous, considerate magpie! That must have been an awesome way to wake up...

  • LOL, magpies are such a PITA. There aren't usually any around, the neighbors' many cats keep them away. Not sure if I will miss all the wildlife when we move. We have all sorts of birds (we have actually had a bald eagle in our yard). Also coyotes, cougar (only heard it), tons of frogs, hawks, garter snakes, deers and skunks. Wasn't too happy about the skunk that decided to park itself under the shed. And that deer keep coming in the yard, leaving "raisins", eating my trees and putting big divets in the ground; but it is really cool to see a dozen deer camping on the front lawn.

I'll send you our little neighborhood hawk, he'll keep the magpies away and the song birds can come back!

Oh, yeah, and DH was busting a gut when he phoned me, he knew!! He would never touch it though! He has no prob dealing with human blood and guts, but yucky animals and poopy diapers his gag reflex kicks in. Just like his mom (who phones me to come help with critters, roflpmp).

  • Okay, I have to ask... what is a magpie? The only thing I can think of that it could be is a turkey vulture?

And... gross! And I would be pissed at my DH if he did that to me. Was he running late or something? That is SO a man's job! Along with taking out the trash! Just kidding, sort of.

  • Magpie is a lot like a crow, but more annoying. And louder. I think I would flip if we had turkey vultures....they'd probably be trying to get at the food supply that is my neighbor's yard full of stray cats.

lol, yeah, normally it wuold be a man thing, but around here, there are opposites. I hate to cook and suck royally at it, dh is really good at it (or we'd starve he says). DH has no clue about cars, I do. And he usually does bring the bin out, but he was running really late. at least he remembered his glasses. Yucky things and dead stuff doesn't bother me (which explains my first career choice). I can't handle live things that are injured, I pass out. He is amazing with it (which is good considering his job, lol!).

    Here a magpie:

  • I'm pretty sure I've never seen one before! Thanks for the picture :) We've got turkey vultures here. They mostly circle behind the house since there is a huge meadow out there. But they are disgusting when you see them on the side of the road picking on a dead animal. Ew!!

But now I gotta ask, what was your first career choice?

  • Yeah, magpies pretty much do the same thing. We don't get many turkey vultures around here - not nearly as pretty as a magpie.

mmmm, first career choice was Ident unit (think CSI field work). I wanted badly to work with the men in red, but alas, L's health wasn't so good at the time I was waiting on training. And they closed my file as a result, so I am still rethinking where to go. I have odd options, and trying to figure out where to go from there. I've been working in accounting since then, not really sure it's a fit. We'll see what happens when my leave is up, my company has lots of options (but not nearly as interesting as pathologyStick out tongue)

  • Ewwww!

  • Well, now you know what to get your DH for Father's Day. A long stick and a package of ziplocks, so he can scootch that bad boy off next time he drives by and sees the magpies have left you an offering. LOL.

And, eww. No worries re: the pic - no worries at all. :)
