Omgosh When did this happen?

I went to the doctor on Thursday and stepped on the scale.....I GAINED 9LBS. IN ONE MONTH!! The nurse was basically yelling at me and the doctor said "We'd like to keep the weight gain to a lb. a week" UGH! I have gained a total of 30lbs. so far and im only 29 weeks! Has this happened to anyone else? I feel like a blimp! I'm scared of not being able to lose the weight after te bab arrives. I'm not a shallow person but I know that it's not healthy for the baby either to gain too much weight.

  • Yes right here!  I have gained 35 lbs!  I gained 11 lbs in one month!  Dont worry as long as you dont have high blood pressure and are healthy you will be just fine.  They should not have lectured you like that IMO.  I gained 60lbs with DD and I got back into shape and wore a size 4 by the time she was a year old.  It just takes time to workout and be a mom, and work FT.  This time around I was really trying not to gain so much, but my body just does what it wants to when I am pregnant, very hard to control.  I hope you feel better and dont let it get to you, you are almost done! :)

  • I gained 10 pound in one month at my last visit- putting my total gain at 24 pounds. My doctor wanted me to gain 25 for my whole pregnancy! I flipped! Luckily I did not get lectured, but the crazy part is people tell me how good I look and are surprised I am due at the end of July. I cannot figure out where the 10 pounds are! Anyhow I am trying to watch what I eat more, and am hoping the baby had an early growth spurt! Maybe we'll be lucky and barely put on anymore? What can you do...

You're not alone! I gained 6 lbs in 1 month, and a total of 30 so far. The sad thing is I gained 20 lbs BEFORE I was even pregnant, due to several kinds of fertility drugs. So I am already up about 50 lbs, and still have a few months to go. Eeek. My dr wasn't happy about the 6 lbs in 1 month, but thought I had too much calcium/dairy in my diet. I had switched to 2% milk and was eating a lot of cheese and other dairy. He said I really only needed 2 servings a day, so I've been cutting back. It is really hard tho. Sometimes I am just soooo hungry! I am trying focus on having a healthy baby and not worry about the weight gain too much. I figure I can exercise and take LO for walks. Hopefully that plus BFing will help with weight loss.

Maybe we need to start an exercise/weight loss support group on this board for after our babies arrive! Could be good to have some extra support & encouragement. :)

I gained 8 pounds in one month (February) then no pounds in March and April. Doctor isn't worried. Apparently, babies go through growth spurts and most people have one or two big months of weight gain.

  • Yes! And all my dr. said was, "Most girls gain a ton of weight one month then it returns to normal/stagnates from here on out. So unless it happens again, don't worry about it."

It happened to me at 6ish months but it's leveled/pound a week since then.

  • I just had my 30 week appt on Thursday and I gained 8 pounds in a month.  I have only gained 18 though so far.  I didn't gain my weight until the end with my first and it seems to be going the same way this time.  I was very sick for the first 22 weeks.  Just remember your body gains what it needs to for the baby.

  • With DD I gained 9 lbs in one month. I only gained 7 the entire rest of the time! I think it's normal.

I still haven't had the one big gain so far this time....still waiting (dreading)...

  • I gained 8 pounds in one month (weeks 25-29), but my midwife was okay with this.  I had only gained 11 pounds through the first 25 weeks of pregnancy and she was confident my body was catching up.  Midwife said some ladies gain gradually and some gain all at once.  I am on track to gain 30 pounds total if I gain one pound a week from here on out (I was hoping to only gain 25).

I, too, am scared about not being able to lose the weight once baby arrives.  I am trying to eat healthy, drink a lot of water, stay active and keep a positive attitude about my changing body (I figure if you show love to your bod it will love you back).

    Good luck!

Don't worry.  I just think this is a time of rapid growth.  I've gained over 30 lbs, and my doctor has no problem with it.  He knows I exercise often,  so this is just what the baby needs.  Don't worry, it happens!

  • Well my total has been 17, but last month I gained 7 and the month before 6! ...I thought the 6 was bad the trip before! I go to the doctor tomorrow, but I also lost about 3 lbs last night vomiting so I'm hoping for a lower number, lol... With DS I was SO good, I gained a total of 23 lbs. and always had 1 to 2 lb weight gains....
  • Yes, I had a 9lb weight gain one month too.  My doctor said "what are you eating???"  I'm going every two weeks now and actually lost 1/2 a pound in two weeks. I wasn't trying to lose weight, I'm just not able to eat like I was.  I'm getting so full and uncomfortable after meals so I've been eating smaller meals.  Anyway, my doctor was happy with the weight loss and said it made up for the month that I gained 9 pounds.  He said it's common for weight gain to slow down towards the end.
  • Thanks so much for comforting me! Glad to know I'm not alone. I think part of the problem is that I was originally exercising everyday for half an hour and since I had some minor complicaions and heavy bleeding (previous posts) my husband won't let me do anything! I'm gana just take the weight gain in stride and just deal with it all later. I'm just too hungry now to cut back!!

  • I gained about 40 with my first, so that's about the same as you.  I lost all of it within a year, but it wasn't easy.  Don't worry though, you probably won't gain nearly as much next month.
