Thank you in advance for any recs on diaper bags. I'm flying blind and have no idea what I should be on the look out for. I'm registering on Amazon & BRU, so something I could put on one of those would be great, but I'd also be happy to buy for myself if you want to rec something online only or something.
Thanks again!
Re: Recommend your diaper bag pls!
I had and started with the Petunia Pickle Bottom Boxy Backpack and I hated it. I was so bummed because I had read rave reviews and people seemed to really love it but I just didn't like it at all. The material isn't very giving so it seems stiff to me...the inside of mine was black fabric so it was like a big black hole and finding things were difficult.
I ended up selling that one and getting the JuJuBe BFF and I LOVE it. I can't rave enough about it. It's got plenty of space, has a mommy pocket and one of my favorite features are the insulated pockets for bottles and sippy cups. I'm sure you can find them on Amazon...I bought mine at Buy Buy Baby.
If you want a PPB and you can wait, I got mine at Nordstrom's Anniversary Sale at the end of the summer (August I think?). It was a good deal!
ETA: I just googled and it's the middle of July!
I have Skip Hop's Studio in Pewter Dot
I love it and get a lot of compliments on it. Most people don't even realize it's a diaper bag. I love the fact that it has the two front pockets so I can keep all my purse items there and I also like the stroller straps. When I'm not using them to hook the bag to the stroller I usually hook my keys to one of them so they don't get lost in the enormous bag.
I know a lot of people suggest getting a backpack style bag if you plan to do a lot of babywearing but I didn't really have a problem wearing G and carrying the bag on my shoulder.
I'm probably no help cause I had several diaper bags. They all fit different needs at different times. As a newborn I felt the PPB boxy backpack was worthless. I need something that had easy access to reach in and grab stuff. I found my Skip Hop CIty Chic to be great during the first 6 months with plenty pockets and study stucture making everything easy to find. Then we really didn't need something as bulky, found a Skip Hop Duo on clearance and that worked really well for awhile. Someone had gifted us a PPB boxy backpack at one of my showers... I started using it around 10+ months and found it was great for day care and long day trips but still used the Duo for quick trips around town.
Especially as the baby got older, I didn't want to carry a 25lb+ baby on my hip and a heavy diaper bag on my other shoulder. I really did need a backpack at that point. We used that until recently when we got DD a Skip Hop Toddler Back Pack.
I had a Skip Hop Duo Deluxe at first and it was okay, but I decided after a few months that a backpack would be more functional for me. I got this one from REI right before our trip to Greece last summer and I love it:
It's not meant to be a diaper bag but it works great as one. It's not too big but still fits plenty of essentials, has a water bottle holder and the zip pocket on the back is perfect for a changing mat. You can wear it as a sling or as a backpack. It works great as a small carry on for plane trips too.
I have the go gaga slide and I love it.

We LOVE our Diaper Dude messenger Bag. It's not fancy, frilly, girly- but it is the BEST bag ever and it's good because Chris carries it as well.
We've used ours for both Alex & Simon and it still looks like new after almost 5 years of continuous use.
I carry a purse as well but throw all my stuff in the diaper dude if I'm not dropping them at school. It's big, it's hands-free- the pockets are well organized. Bottle pockets in front- cell phone on the strap, little clippies o the side for your keys.
Best deal is online but you can hands-on see them at Nordies. LOVE it.
I've had several other "frilly" bags and I always, always go back to the DD.
I have now (and have had it from the beginning) the Skip Hop Duo in black. It's not too big (which I love), but could still hold everything we needed it to. It's simple and super functional without being ugly. Of course, it isn't necessarily a style statement piece, but that was SOOO worth it for me since my hubs doesn't mind carrying it at all and is almost always the one it's hanging off of (messenger style) when we're out together.
It has also held up perfectly after being used every day for almost 2 and a half years. It still looks brand new.
I like it so much that I'm going to get the double version for long day trips with both kids.
DD2: February 2014
Same here. We went with the black so that DH wouldn't feel weird carrying it around when he's out with DS alone.
I have 2. The first is an OiOi from PBK. I like it OK, but found it wasn't big enough for everything I needed. John uses it still and I use it for shorter trips. The 2nd one I bought recently before starting daycare is the PPB Weekender. Its HUGE, but since I bring cloth diapers every day, it does the trick. and its great when we head to the bay area for the day b/c I can fit enough cloth diapers plus outfits, blankets, toys, even my moby wrap fits inside.

You guys are nicer than me.
I wanted the more girly one and I really didn't care. DH doesn't seem to mind either since the only times he carries it he is usually with me.
I use a free one I got at the hospital, they gave me 3 diaper bags full of formula samples and coupons. I ended up using one of them. I had a basic black one from Target that some sunscreen leaked into and ruined.
I liked the neutral color of black, I am weird about matching my purse to what I wear, so I wanted something I could always at least not clash with.
I would have loved a designer one, but I couldn't afford it and I felt bad in asking for a $100 diaper bag as a gift.
Thanks again everyone!!
Of course I'm going to go to the store and check them out in person before I decide, but it's kind of hard to know before I start lugging baby things around every single day just what I might like about a particular bag/organization/etc. Having opinions helps me narrow things down a lot more. Off to Goore's this afternoon
20% off everything in the store - could be dangerous
Thanks again!
it's nothing glamourous but i LOVED my eddie bauer diaper bag i got at BRU. it's got a ton of outside pockets (6!) and the entire inside is waterproof along w/ 3 more pockets. it's just basic tan/khaki colored canvas bag but it holds a TON !
i also used the bag i got at the hospital for her diaper bag if we were going on short errands .. mine was a vera bradley tote
