High-Risk Pregnancy

Anyone else with Complete Previa?

I guess I am new to this board.  At my anatomy scan at 19 weeks we discovered that I have complete previa.  On Wednesday morning at 1:30 a.m., I woke up to blood gushing out of me, complete with clots.  I guess I always expected bleeding, but never thought there would be so much of it.  After my parents came over to stay with my girls, we headed to the hospital.  The bleeding seemed to stop as quickly as it came, which was a relief, and my baby was fine.  I stayed the rest of Wednesday and overnight so they could keep an eye on me.  And now I am on bed rest for at least a week.

I was told I am a "ticking time bomb", and my doctors were really reluctant to let me go home.  I admit that I am not handling it very well.  I am afraid I am going to be put on bed rest for the duration of this pregnancy (I'm only 22 weeks), or worse, put in the hospital for constant supervision.  My previa is pretty "central" and has not moved in the past 3 weeks.  I will check again in 4 weeks, but if it doesn't move, then I think I may be looking for a pretty rough 3rd trimester.

Is anyone else in this situation?  I have a call into my doctor regarding the outlook of the rest of my pregnancy, but I was curious what those of you with previa have been told.

I hate bed rest, and it sure would be nice to have others that are with me.  I am not sure I am truly high risk yet or not, but I sure hope I can join you.  I could use some friends :)

Re: Anyone else with Complete Previa?

  • Sorry you are dealing with this. I was also diagnosed with a complete previa at 19 weeks. I was put on modified bed rest right away. I don't know if anything I have to say is going to make you feel better, but here is what has happened with mine. By 25 weeks I had 2 bleeds and was admitted into the hospital for a week. This was the first time in 6 weeks that my placenta had finally moved from complete to partial. Since my bleeding didn't continue for that whole week, I was sent home as long as I agreed to be on complete bed rest and would have someone around to drive me to the hospital ASAP if needed. And I was told if I had another major bleed, I would be admitted into the hospital until I delivered the baby. At 28 weeks, the previa went from partial to marginal. By 31 weeks it was low-lying, my doctor thinks it could possibly keep moving and I may be able to deliver without needing a c-section. I have another appt this monday to check it again. So don't give up hope just yet, it still may move and mine was pretty "centralized" too when it began. I have had some small bleeds since coming home from the hospital, fortunately they have stopped within minutes and turned to old brown blood fast enough that my doctor told me to just stay home and get back in bed. My last one was just 2 days ago. I know its scary and bed rest absolutely sucks, but just try and take it easy. No sex, no exercise, no lifting anything! Good luck and I hope it moves for you soon.

It didn't seem to run together at all :)

It sounds like what you went through is what I may have to go through, according to my doctor's.  They wanted to keep me in the hospital for a week, but I wanted to get home to my kids.  If I bleed again, I likely will be there for the week at least.  I am praying that I won't bleed anymore.  You give me hope that it could still move, but at the same time, I think it's the moving that's causing the bleeding.  I am nervous, but trying to stay optimistic.

  • I was diagnosed w/ marginal previa at 20 weeks, at 28 weeks it still had not moved.  At 32 weeks (last tuesday) I had a major bleed in the train station of all places, and was admitted to the hospital for 2 nights where they were able to stop the bleeding thank goodness.  Turns out my previa moved from marginal to complete (which I guess is rare for it to move that way)

Anyways, I am on bed rest at home for the next 5 weeks until my scheduled c-section at 37 weeks.  Needless to say I am terrified of bleeding again because if I do I will be in the hospital for the duration.

Scary diagnosis- I'm sorry there are others going through this too! Hopefully the rest of the time will be uneventful for all of us!

I am 22 weeks and came to this board for that exact reason. I had bleeding yesterday and went to the ER. They diagnosed partial previa and sent me home on modified bedrest and pelvic rest.

Im trying to remain positive since Ive already seem many stories where even complete previas right themselves by delivery time. Sending good thoughts your way that the placenta gets to moving in the right place and gives you some rest from resting!

I always though bedrest would be wonderful (nothing to do! Just hang out!) but now I realize that its AWFUL. There is so much to still do, but its not getting done (we just moved house and our things are in boxes) and all I can do is sit here and look at it. Frustrating!
