Pregnant after 35

weight vs age

DH and I are planning to start TTC this year and we are both working on our weight and fitness.  I still have about 40 pounds I would like to lose but the longer it takes the older I get (go figure!).  Was anyone in this position before becoming pregnant?  Which is the bigger issue from your perspective now- weight or age?  I will be 37 in July and have never been pregnant.  Thanks for any advice you have!

Re: weight vs age

  • Neither were an issue for me - I'm 42 and "obese" - I did lose 50 pounds before I got pregnant but still had another 50 or more to go.  I got pregnant without trying and all tests indicate this is a healthy baby boy.

  • If you're healthy, just do it.

I don't believe the argument that just because your body holds extra weight you're unhealthy.

I had just lost 70 lbs before our little "accident". I've gained 60 back during the pregnancy. Mostly because I can't take my thyroid medication, get any good exercise in and my joints are a disaster due to the hormones released during pregnancy.

If you have good blood pressure, your heart is in good condition, you're blood sugar is fine... go for it. Honestly 40 or 50 lbs isn't going to make a difference and you'll likely gain it back while pregnant, where as many "heavier" ladies just gain less weight while pregnant.

In the end it's a wash IMHO.

This.  I had an extra 20 on me that I was in the process of schucking. Didn't happen. As long as you are healthy.  You just may need to watch your weight gain a little closer during the pregnancy, if you can.  What I have learned on here is that your body will gain what it will gain, when it wants to gain it during pregnancy....despite your efforts!!!  Now get cracking on the baby!!!

  • I have to watch my weight gain and plus size maternity clothes suck imo. (I am plus size)  Other then that I would go for it.  You can continue your weight loss effort while you try.  Then you can kind of be on maintenance just don't use PG as an excuse to eat everything and anything.

  • I lost 28 lbs and had another 10 to go after my tummy tuck and then this little surprise.  I've gained 15lbs so far and the baby is measuring around 5 of them.  I'm not worried as I'm assuming this last month I'll probably gain alot more weight.  It'll come off, eventually and I'll have a healthy baby afterwards.

I agree with the pp, if you're healthy otherwise, go for it!  We as women always battle with this weight thing, why not add a little joy in the mix.

  • I'm 37 now and was category 1 obese when I got pregnant (no other health complications).  I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes (tested due to strong family history of diabetes) at the beginning of the 2nd trimester and put on a diet to control.  I've been able to control blood sugar without insulin and have been eating really well.  Additionally, I've lost almost 20 pounds (which the doctor informs me every visit is not a bad thing).  I feel like I eat more than I used to, just different choices.

So, if you're healthy, go for it!

I'm glad your doctor is on the same page with you. I must say the doctor has me scared about weight gain but I have not been starving myself. it seems my little one is really helping me keep my weight in check by ensuring my morning sickness hangs in well into my 2nd tri. Stick out tongue

Did they give you a diet guide for the GD? If you would be willing to share I would love to see a copy my DH has a form of diabetes but needs to o back to the doctors for new diet guidelines. His is smaller portions and small amount of carbs. It's hard to find a good variety of things to eat. I could m you my email addy if you wouldn't mind.

No problem, I would be happy to share with you what they gave me.

  • losing weight and ttc are not mutally exclusive.  even during pg one can continue to eat well, exercise even lose some weight.

  • I was over 200 pounds when we started TTC. Not ideal but I was also 39 and figured it would take dangerously long to get to where I was "supposed to" be weight-wise.

It took four months to conceive and I did not end up with gestational diabetes. I gained 30 pounds over the course of the pregnancy and lost 20 of that in the first week.

Then again, age ended up not really being an issue either.

I was of a normal weight - for me, it was age that became an issue. I was found to have high FSH, which is related to age much of the time (deminished ovarian reserve).

  • I was 20lbs heavier than I had been in the past when we got the BFP, sure I'd of liked to weigh less but my doc said I'm healthy and not to worry about it. Hoping with nursing I can loose the baby weight and maybe a few extra

  • I would go ahead and start trying.  You don't know how long it is going to take for you to get pregnant and you don't want to miss your "window" because you were waiting for things to be perfect.

For some people, however, weight can be a factor in their ability to conceive.  It's not a reason to wait, but something to keep in mind if you do have difficulty.

  • I was working on losing 20-35 pounds when we got pregnant. (20 for health, 15 for vanity) I hadn't had much success (loosing weight at 36 is definitely not as easy as it was when I was 26), but between four months of P90X and two months of aerobic kickboxing, I was in really good physical shape, which has helped a lot.

I think getting in good shape is more important than losing weight. Even though I started out 20 pounds heavier than a healthy BMI, my doctor hasn't mentioned my weight being an issue once. I have good muscle tone and it's obvious I'm not a couch potato. That being said, I am really watching my weight and have only gained about 10 pounds so far (all in my belly and bra). I'm trying not to gain more than 20.

I read a fertility book that advocates taking a 3 month "premester" to get some good eating habits and good exercise program in place before TTC. It makes sense. Anything you can do to prep your body for being pregnant will pay off big time. Pregnancy is no joke. I think it would even crumble Tony Horton :)

  • I'm 38 and need to lose quite a bit but all my OB told me was that she would much rather deal with someone overweight than someone way underweight and trying to force them to eat enough for the baby. So far I've lost weight due to m/s and was only told to just try to find something to keep down. This is my first week m/s free and I've really worked on getting back on track with healthy eating.

As far as it being more difficult to conceive, I was thinking this (esp w/ the Biggest Loser coming out and several of the women on there wanted to be on there b/c they wanted to start a family, one having had several miscarriages already) but I haven't seen that with me. I had been on the pill since I was a teenager and 3 months after I went off and we began TTC I got a BFP. Unfortunately it turned out as a blighted ovum, but once we were given the go ahead to try again, which was just a month later, after I had a period, we got another BFP and everything is going great so far...so bottom line, go for it! You'll burn off plenty of weight when your LO gets here and you're chasing him/her around Big Smile

  • im 38 and overweight myself...lost 40 lbs prior to this pregnancy but still have another 50 to go...I have not gained a pound this whole pregnancy and the baby has been fine and growing as she should...im now 25 weeks and walk everyday....I kept telling myself over the years i need to be down to a certain weight before we tried to get pregnant again and well the years went by....finally i said forget it...do what your heart says to do
