Soft serve ice cream

So I have a question. I got this yummy blizzard from dairy queen tonight because I have been wanting one. Only a small one, nothing big. Does anyone know if dairy queen or soft serve ice cream is okay to eat. I haven't seen too much saying you can't but I'm not sure. Anyone else had an dairy queen lately? :)

Re: Soft serve ice cream

  • It better be the way I eat it! I wouldn't think there would be problems unless you have GD.

  • I am hoping there is no issues with any kind of ice cream.  I just had some again tonight.  There is this awesome place that opened up and they make home made ice cream.  It is phenomenal and I would prefer to have some every night!

  • There is nothing wrong with soft serve as long as your diet has not been limited by your Dr. and the machine is clean.
  • eat to your heart's content!
  • wahoo! Ladies, I love your opinions. I looked it up (which I never should have, so tisk on me, lol) and everything was saying that soft served ice cream can carry the Listeria bacteria. So I figured who better to ask than the lovely ladies here, hehe! :) Thanks!!
  • I've had DQ a few times this pregnancy. There's one walking distance from my house! haha

Eat it! I had read something on the bump message boards about soft serve and listeria (I've been very careful, but it's just me) so I asked my doctor and she looked at me like I was crazy and said "last summer when I was pregnant I had a soft serve almost every day".

Completely about to enjoy some soft serve that we brought home from our local place!

  • Wow! Thats great to hear!! :) Thanks so much!
  • If you live near a Dairy Queen thank the Heavens above for bestowing you with this gift. Eat. Every.Single. Bit!

I am super jealous of you right now. ENJOY!!

Honestly we get this one, delicious, frozen, magical thing thing - no happy hour drinks, no drag off a friends cig, etc - we get ice cream.

  • Thank you very much for posting this...now I am craving a Snicker blizzard!

I think you should eat up and a large one at that! ha!

I think the only type of ice cream you should worry about is homemade ice cream, it is made with raw eggs. With summer coming a lot of people make homemade ice cream. I am gonna have to look for recipes with cooked or no eggs this summer!

  • If you want to be super super super careful, you should technically not eat soft serve. However, I don't think it's that risky. If DQ had dirty machines that caused regular listeria outbreaks they would go out of business- listeria sucks for everyone, not just pg women. And the reality is that anything can have listeria so you would literally have to stop eating if you wanted to avoid it (a few months back there was a listeria recall on boxes of spinach, that's not on any "do not eat" lists.). I won't eat lunchmeat without heating it up, but I eat soft serve.

I am reading this at 9 am Sunday morning and all I can think of it wanting a soft serve ice cream!  Guess I have to wait until one of them opens around me!

  • I've been eating soft serve - but the concern is that the machines may carry the listeria bacteria. I've heard pretty disgusting things about some food/drink machines in general that have difficult parts to clean...so I can see how this would be a problem. We can't avoid everything, and ice cream is one thing I'm not avoiding.

I love when people post things like this...did you read any of the thread before you posted?  There's an entire discussion on why she asked.

  • I would personally be a lot more concerned about the handling of meat and the risk of cross contamination with EVERYTHING there not just singling out of soft serve... I mean since we are more likely to get it we could really get it anywhere... Fast food places, restaurants, even our own kitchens...

Yep, there was a chicken, pork, and broccoli recall because of listeria just in March of this year.

I'm not terribly concerned about soft serve ice cream.  Then again, I also eat (unheated) lunch meat from time to time too.  It's really just about what you're comfortable with and what you're OB recommends for you, IMO.

I hope you are avoiding all celery, broccoli, milk, and tuna salad.  Those items were all in recent listeria outbreaks too.  Better wait until pregnancy is over to indulge in eating at all.  Too risky!!!!

Please do not make fun of my choices. As I said to each their own. I just wanted to put the info out there.

I have an extremely high risk pregnancy and have done everything in my power to protect my child in every way possible. A little over the top? Maybe.

FYI I triple wash uncooked veggies, do not eat any tuna and drink soy milk. Wink

I agree with you: to each her own.  I'm on the more conservative side myself.  Seriously... to me, NO FOOD is worth the risk... I miss sushi and oysters on the cape most of all, but I DON'T miss them enough to risk it.  So yeah, food is a bit bland for awhile, but I think it's worth it in the end.  No big deal.  An no soft serve for me, either.  I LOVE LOVE LOVE ice cream, though, and I eat Edy's or Ben and Jerry's at least a few times a week.  YUM!
