Zumba ? (and some rambling)

I'm three weeks out from having my baby, and I'm starting to look into gym memberships and classes so that when I get the ok to start working out, I can start working on taking the weight off and toning up. I think I gained around 45lbs with this pregnancy (starting at 140), and I'd like to get down to around 130. Well, more than anything I want to tone up and get in shape, so I guess I care more about how I look and how my clothes fit than an actual number, but I remember feeling pretty good about myself when I weighed that much.

Anyway, if you have taken Zumba classes, how effective are they? They look like fun, and they are pretty cheap ($5/class or $28/month, classes 2x a week), but will I actually see results? Unfortunately, I know I don't push myself very far when I work out on my own. I thought about joining a gym, but the two main ones in town aren't great options. Gym #1 is close to home, affordable, but doesn't offer consistent classes. Gym #2 is about 20 minutes away, expensive even with a 3 year contract, but has a ton of classes. So, that leaves me with feeling that taking the Zumba classes that are down the road from my home would be my best choice.

Opinions?

  • I agree with the above poster that it's not just working out, but also how you eat that will have a direct effect on how much you lose.  That being said you can burn anywhere from 400-1000 calories in a Zumba class. I am a Zumba  instructor and according to my heart rate monitor, I normally burn 1100 calories each session. So, it could definitely help with weight if you are eating healthy. Good luck.

  • I too am a Zumba Instructor and I lost 20 lbs by taking Zumba classes along with dieting, but i've been able to keep the weight off by keeping up with the classes (granted I teach 10 a week).

I teach a lot of songs that work on the fitness end of Zumba- I teach songs specifically for ab work, leg/butt work, so hopefully your instructor will too.  I also have a Zumba Toning class that works specifically with muscle resistance and light weights to tone up, you might have one in your area as well, if so I'd highly recommend it.

I've had to cut down my intensity due to the pregnancy but before I was pregnant I was up around 700 calories per class.  It's a great way to lose weight and it's lots of fun (I guess I'm a bit biased), good luck, I hope you end up enjoying it!
