Bouncer for nighttime sleep? should we quit?

cross posting on an older/wiser mother board! ;)

DD will do up to 4 hour stretches at night (...aaand, I've just jinxed things!) but ONLY in her bouncer. We've attempted to put her in the PnP in our room, but she's up pretty quickly afterwards.

Pediatrician said bouncer-sleep at night is no biggee, but eventually it needs to get phased out.

Should we just keep using the bouncer, and risk setting it up as an even harder habit to break? Or start using the PnP right now and go back to square one for a while w/crappy sleep?

(*btw, she will nap in the PnP all day, just nighttime is the issue)

Re: Bouncer for nighttime sleep? should we quit?

  • We're in the same boat...only sleeps in the swing or the rock n play.  Right now we're just doing whatever it takes to get some sleep.  Our pedi is ok with it, so we're sticking with it for now.  He just got diagnosed with reflux, so we're hoping that his meds will help him be more comfortable laying down flat.

I think it will be easier to transition him to a crib once he's over his startle reflex and once he doesn't need to be able to swaddled anymore.  We did that with #1...left him swaddled till 5-6 months when the reflex tends to go away, and by then he was just learning to roll so he started sleeping on his belly on his own doing and he slept great.  So basically we aren't messing with a good thing until we have too!

DS sleeps in the lamb seat in the PnP and it works for us for now. As far as we know, he doesn't have any reflux issues (thankfully!) so it's more out of convenience. He doesn't seem to like to lay flat on his back so we're waiting until he tolerates that better. Hopefully we won't end up with a horrible habit to break.. he's starting to get a little too long for the lamb!

  • At two weeks and some days, it's about survival for now. In fact, I'd say it's all about survival for the first 6 weeks. She can't form habits until she's about 4 months old so don't worry about that. She might have acid reflux that makes it uncomfy for her to lie flat on her back but, seriously, if she's sleeping well in the bouncer I'd stick with it until it doesn't work anymore (DS used to sleep all the time in his swinger but now he'll only take short naps).

  • Our pedi has DS sleeping in either his car seat or his swing because of his GERD - so I don't see a problem with it. Sleep is important for you and your LO

  • We are just now transitioning to the pnp from the bouncer.
