what do you think of...

getting donated BM from a stranger through a group like Human Milk 4 Human Babies? Is it strange?  Is it safe?

I have done everything in my power to produce more BM for my DS but I am still only making about 8 oz of the 27 he eats a day and that is if he eats as well as he has at our three weighed feedings (with the LC).

Re: what do you think of...

  • If I could not produce enough to feed my baby, I would definitely accept donated breast milk. If I have any frozen stash leftover when we wean baby boy, I will donate it.  I feel like the type of woman who takes the time to store and donate her breast milk is the type of woman I trust, you know?

  • My sis did.  Go for it!

  • I would assume they test it so yes, I would definitely take it.

  • I've looked into donating in the future because we have a milk bank here and there is an extensive process that a donor has to go through (blood draws, physical, medical history, etc) to verify that the milk isn't contaminated with some disease. Plus, on top of that it is pasteurized. I think it is so much more regulated than cow's milk (just speculating though) and most people drink that without a second thought. I would definitely look into it.

  • If you feel really strongly about LO getting breast milk instead of formula, and so long as the BM comes from a managed source, then I say go for it.

  • My son got donor breastmilk in the NICU during the time when he was transfered to the Level 3 NICU and the time I was discharged from the hospital where he was born.  If you get it through a reputable bank, it's just as safe as donated blood, I think.  It's crazy expensive through a bank, though.

That being said, I know there are a lot of milk swaps and things that aren't screened.  I wouldn't do that.

I agree. I wouldn't do this. Even though I'm sure 99.99% of the donors are well intentioned and providing good, clean BM there are some whack jobs out there. I wouldn't trust a total stranger.

  • I don't think it's strange and would totally do it.  If you go through a reputable place, they have extensive screening as far as whose milk they'll accept...it's not like just anyone can give milk.  I don't think I'd be able to because I take a certain med (but I'm not positive because I've never looked into donating-I don't make extra at this point!)
