Do you wait for a cry?

My DD is a very noisy sleeper as she grunts and stretches all night long. She's so noisy in fact that I'm losing major sleep and we're considering moving her to her room already (much earlier than we did our DS). She never cries in the night, not once she was born and I just know to feed her when her grunts start getting really loud around the 3 hour mark. My question to you is: do you think I should try ignore her waking up and wait for an actual cry to go feed her? Perhaps she'll fall back asleep and I just haven't given her the chance yet? I'm wondering if we move her to her room perhaps we can ignore her noises and get longer stretches of sleep out of her. I know the only way to find out is to give it a try, and we will, I'm just curious what your ladies' experiences have been. Do you wait for crying?

Re: Do you wait for a cry?

  • My dd is the same way.  She grunts and groans but in the morning I wait for her to start to whine and usually I can hear her starting to suck on her fist so I know she's hungry.  But she also sleeps 7-9 hours at night.

  • Honestly, unless I'm ready to wake up (because I think it's been abnormally long since DS woke) I don't hear anything until he cries.  I sleep with earplugs in to block out DH's snoring.  Sometimes if I'm not in a deep sleep though, I do hear lots of grunting preceeding the cry...I will usually wait a few minutes and see if he gets louder and louder and starts whimpering before getting him up.  Sometimes he'll go back to sleep if I wait it out.

  • I don't typically wait for him to cry just because he's usually been asleep for a good chunk of time. At night he sleeps about 6-7 hours and then wakes us with a quiet grunting, stretching, rousing noise. If it has been less than 5 hours, I might try giving him the pacifier instead. He does the same thing when he wakes up from a nap.

Yep, I wait for the cries. My DD is also a very loud sleeper and does tons of grunts, groans, gasps, squeaks and hums. I quickly learned the difference between the ones that require me and the ones that don't. Sometimes it's still hard to tell if the noise will turn to cries, but usually when she's hungry and ready to get up, the grunts etc. turns to whines and whimpers before any real crying begins. Sooo basically, if it gets to whimpers, I know she's about to start wailing and I get up. I hope that makes sense, lol. She normally sleeps 6-7 hours before needing to get up.

I say try waiting it out to see if she goes back to sleep or not. And FWIW, we are moving DD to her own room this weekend because of the noisy sleeping issue, and I'm sure I will hear less of her noises once she's there. I'm nervous, though!

  • If I think it's too early for her to be hungry, I'll try to ignore them and see if she falls back asleep. If I can't ignore it, and I really don't think she should be hungry, I'll go re-swaddle her and give her her soother, and she'll often fall back asleep for 4 more hours!! So obviously she wasn't hungry. I have a 10 second rule - if I hear her fussing on the monitor, I'll count to ten to see if she carries on or actually cries before getting up. Fortunately DD isn't too noisy unless she actually needs to get up.

  • DS rarely cries at night... just makes "hungry noises". I don"t wait for him to cry, but usually I do let him make the noises for a few minutes to see whether he'll go back to sleep. If he doesn't, I pull him into bed and feed him.

Sometimes he grunts (gas), and when he does that he"ll usually fall asleep a few min. later.

  • I did the same thing as you--around the three to four hour mark I'd nurse him even if he wasn't crying (he goes to bed at 11 so it was usually around 3 or so that I'd wake up and reach for him). But I started to notice that he would basically sleep through the feeding, it would only last 5 minutes and he would just go back to sleep with no rocking or anything so once I moved him to his crib last week we dropped it. This whole week, he's slept 8 hours straight (down at 10:30ish and up at 6:30), I'm sure he'll revert and I ought to mark this magical time in my diary but yeah, all this to say, I wait for an actual whine/cry now.
