Crying at the breast?

In the past week, DS has been extra fussy. He's also been eating for shorter periods of time during the day, but more often. He has been pulling off the breast and crying a lot, especially during evening feedings. Yesterday we gave him a bottle of BM in the evening and he kept taking breaks while eating that, too. It's weird... he used to eat nonstop for 30 min. or so, and then go 2-3 hours between feedings.

I have a few guesses as to what it could be. He has been drooling a lot and chewing on his hands... so maybe he's teething and it hurts him to nurse? It's really early for teething, but not impossible...

Also, he's been sleeping longer in the night and napping less during the day, so I'm wondering if he's getting overtired.

I'm also going back to work next week and I've been really stressed and upset about it. Maybe he's picking up on my mood?

My last theory is that my milk flow is slower in the evening and he doesn't like it?

Anyone else experience this? Any ideas? It's so frustrating when he's obviously hungry but screams and cries while I try to feed him. Eventually he does eat, but in the meantime, it's so stressful.

Re: Crying at the breast?

  • When my son starts pulling away and crying at the breast, I always try to put him down for a nap/for the night. It usually works especially at night...it's almost like he's sick of me and want sot go to his crib already, lol. GL, I'm sure it's just him being overtired and going through a growth spurt.

  • I think you exactly described my LO!  It is so frustrating for me at night to feed him because he is so fussy and cries and cries at the breast and pulls himself off.  It takes twice as long to feed him because he is so difficult.

The last 2 nights I've been feeding him a 4oz BM bottle at that feeding (8:30ish) and it hasn't been as bad for him and for me.  He doesn't fuss.  I think because it's easier for him to get the milk out faster than nursing on me.

  • My guess would be reflux

  • My DD sometimes does this too.  I think it's usually either because her nose is stuffed up or she needs to poop.
