I know the safest way to sleep is on your left side, but could there be real birth problems, or problems for the baby if i slip on to my back during the night?
No. My ob told me to sleep on my back for as long as it's comfortable, when it's not, it's your body's way of telling you it's not a good position for you and your baby. I slept on my back on and off all night till the very end with both kids. And on my right side, I could never get comfy on my left.

my OB said left side is best, but sleeping on the right side wouldn't hurt anything. She said that sleeping on your back is fine until the baby gets a bit bigger because then it'll start restricting blood flow to both you & baby. But your body will alert you before that happens. Also she said if you MUST sleep on your back, just don't lie flat. Prop yourself up with some pillows. But whatever position is comfortable for you to sleep in, just do it. I hear it's a lotta cushion in there to protect the little ones anyway
They say not to lay on your back because it could restrict blood flow, but just like has been said...ur body will wake you up if someone "isn't right". I am a tosser and turner in my sleep and find that I am on my back quite often. But after awhile, it gets uncomfortable so I end up waking up and just switching positions on my own
I found that if I take my body pillow, and wedge it under my right side so I am partially leaning to the left but mostly on my back is quite comfy. I will alternate sides as I need to. I also found that I can do the same and wedge under my belly a bit more and lean forward, almost on my belly with decent comfort. Thats my last resort to getting comfy, tho.
For some odd reason, my body won't allow me to get comfy on my left side. I don't get it.

I just try to GET comfortable. I was told that if you are on your back and it's not a good idea at that time, your body will DEFINITELY tell you that and you can shift before anything "bad" happens. I am having a hard time getting comfy now, and I have noticed that tossing and turning is not as easy as it used to be. I feel for some of you to be mommies who are further along. Count sheep?

Me too. Sometimes I can sleep on my left side for a little while, but I always end up rolling over to my right side and sleeping better that way.
