Cloth Diapering

Now that you cloth diaper.....

Has cloth diapering influenced you to do other green things?

Since buying all these cloth diapers and stocking up, I've been thinking more and more about buying reusable cloth pads for when I'm at home.  It was something I was thinking about before, but it seemed like too much work.  But now that I have wet bags and daily laundry to look forward to it doesn't seem like as big a deal.

Just wondering if anyone else has had the same thoughts or if cloth diapering has led you to make other green choices that you only thought about before.

  • I think we led a fairly green lifestyle before using cds. Our house is energy star certified, we recycle and compost, buy local where we can, etc. But I just can't do mama cloth. Or the diva cup. Not sure why, but I just can't go there. (so I guess this is the one time it's good to have pcos and rarely have a period! Tmi, I know! Lol!)

  • Yes! I plan on using a Diva cup and mama cloth. I use cloth napkins, I just bought cloth "zip lock" bags, I use vinegar to clean everything and I use EF cleaners when I don't use vinegar. I also recycle everything (always have) and buy organic foods when I can. As for personal product, shampoo, make up ect. they are organic or paraben, petroleum free. I hope to be plastic free (in the kitchen) too one day.
  • we've also always tried to be on the green side.  we have refillable water and coffee cups, recycle, compost, bring our own bags when shopping, save all scrap paper for lists and notes to each other, reuse as much as possible (bottle caps, corks, cardboard, etc...make great art materials), and I started a collection of cloth snack bags for our lunches.  Since we started CDing I've been using cloth wipes for DS's face and nose and plan on making some paper towel sized wipes for us to use.  I've also been interested in getting the diva cup - I can't do family cloth or mama cloth.  I can imagine how easy it'd be and i dno't have an issue with the work its just that something different about adult #2 and AF that I'm not really comfortable with.  We are using the tubelss toilet paper now so that's something.  And i'll probably start using wipes for me when I pee, but that's about as far as I'll go in that dept.  Oh! and I got budda bunz for the dryer to save on energy.  and aside from diaper wash, we only use cold water.

  • i work in the environmental arena and was already trying to be "green".  we recycle lots and compost.  also drive a fuel efficient car and use reusable stuff instead of disposeable as often as possible (grocery bags, food containers, etc).  Since starting cd'ing I've been thinking about both mamacloth and unpaper towels.  One step at a time!  :)

  • It did get me to try reusable breast pads. I love them!
  • For me it was the other way around - I was already using mostly reusable things in my house, so the natural progression was cloth diapers.  :)
  • A little, but I was already looking for ways to be more green prior to starting CD.  I clean with vinegar, baking soda, and EF cleaners.  We use reusable things when we can (grocery bags, things around the kitchen (napkins)).  I try to buy organic and/or local when possible.  Most of our laundry is run with cold water, and I line dry what I can.  I use wool dryer balls.  I use a Diva Cup.  I'm sure there are others that I'm not thinking of now.
  • I've def. started since we decided to cloth diaper.  I use mama cloth (just as liners for now, but will PP and afterwards), I'm making some family cloth today (serger should be here any minute :D) - but for now just going to use it for #1 for me.  Still iffy about adult #2.... I use/make reusable unpaper towels, cloth wipes, and hope to try my hand out soon on some reusable snack bags.  We already use a plastic-y eco friendly type sandwich wrap for SD's lunches, I drive a hybrid, we do all we can to reduce energy/water use in the house (try to use the least amount of heat/ac as possible), and we use wool dryer balls, too.  We also recycle.  Our family of 3 usually has 2 or less bags of trash a week (and I'm sure 1/2 of that is because my SD and hubby didn't know we could put it in recycling!).

I have a house cleaner (yes - It's my one vice, lol) - and she doesn't use eco-friendly stuff.... but I may start making/buying some to keep here for her to use - just haven't yet.

  • Well, first of all, the Diva Cup is about a zillion times better than cloth pads. Seriously amazing, and zero laundry. And probably cheaper than a stash of cloth pads, and lasts for years. I've had mine for about 8, and after a soak in hydrogen peroxide, it's still like new.

I'd say for me, it's the other way around. My general avoidance of consumption and like of all thing green led me to see cloth diapering as a natural extension of my other choices. I'm already composting, minimizing water use, cleaning with homemade vinegar solution, gardening, etc. Cloth diapers fit in with the rest of my life really easily (so far! It's week 1 for us).

  • I just received my Diva Cup + some Lunapads (as Diva Cup back up) and I anxiously awaiting my next period (that's really messed up to say!) to try it out. We've always used re-usable things and tried to re-purpose items, but not specifically for the sake of being green -- is it terrible that we started this process because we're trying to save money? I guess it can't hurt that we're ultimately becoming green and more sustainable in the process.
