NBR: Possibly moving to Minneapolis...

My husband is a pilot and we are considering moving to Minneapolis to be based there for 3-4 years.  Could you recommend a great family friendly area that has a short commute to the airport?  Also, could you tell me what you love/hate about this city.  I don't know anything about this city except that it is really cold!

I would check into the Eagan area, esp areas where you would be in school district 196.  That district has a really good reputation for the schools.   Depending on where in Eagan you are it'd probably be about 10-20 minute commute to the airport.

South St. Paul is also a nice city.   Commute would probably be about 10-20 as well.  House prices are quite reasonable.   The ppl I know that live in SSP don't have school age kids yet, so not totally certain on the schools - although I don't think that I've heard anything real negative about the schools either.

There are lots of nice areas in South Mpls that are all close to the airport.   Just be aware of the flight patterns in that area.  A lot of the houses have had noise-proofing work done - so when inside, you don't notice the noise as much.  But there are some areas that you can't carry on a conversation outside because of the planes every 3-5 minutes.

  • I was also going to say Eagan, Mendota Heights, Lillydale.  Any suburb surronding the St. Paul area would be really decent and the commute wouldn't be bad.  Our winters her are not that bad (except this last one), but we put up with it because our Spring, Summer and Fall is so gorgeous.  I like that there is always something to do no matter what the season.  This is a great place to raise a family!
  • I live in the Eagan area, 196 school district. Great area, and 15 minutes to the airport. Great schools, easy commute, close to the mall and shopping!

    :)

  • The Eagan/Burnsville/Eden Prairie area is close to the airport.  South St. Paul has more of a small town atmosphere and like another pointed out, housing prices are pretty reasonable there.  I can only speak for the Catholic school in SSP, but I've only heard really good things about it as it is linked up with our church..  Inver Grove Heights is another good town in the area and slightly closer to the airport than SSP.  IGH has a lot of rentals available if that's your plan.

I think it really depends on the environment you want to be surrounded by.  If you go towards Lakeville, it's a little longer commute but more of a small town area.  The "cold" is nothing to fear as long as you're prepared for it.  By the end of the first winter you'll know how to layer incredibly well as well as a barn shovel makes a better snow shovel than a plastic one but a snowblower beats shoveling ANY day.

  • My DH is a pilot as well and we live in Anoka. While it is on the other side of the city from the airport his commute is about 50 minutes, but that's usually only a couple times a week. Just to give you an idea of the what kind of commute you're looking at from all sides of the metro area. I would also like to recommend the Prior Lake/Savage/Shakopee area. About 30 minutes from the airport, but lots of young families and great schools.

All I know is pretty much what my boyfriend tells me (hes a Police officer). And I know Im always hearing horror stories about NE Minneapolis, and North minneapolis. I also know when he was buying our house he considered living near Lake Harriet, or Lake Nokomis. Nokomis (sp) can be kinda noisy bc of the airport but all the houses we looked at over there have noise cancelling windows.

And Lake Harriet well its my favorite place, there is a nice lake there, and its just an over all nice area. And really in the Twin Cities just about anywhere is a good spot. I live almost to wisconsin (about 20mins from the state line) and it only takes us 20/30 mins to get to Bloomington. I think the worst thing about the cities is sometimes the traffic can be SUCH a pain. Otherwise I love it here, and I moved here from Michigan.

  • I would have to say it depends on what type of neighborhood you want to live in. Suburban? City?   I work for the police in Anoka County, a north suburbs county, and I love it up here...we are close to the cities yet it feels less urban. However there are some cities I would avoid due to crime like Fridley, Columbia Heights, *** Rapids.  I would avoid most of the central cities in Hennepin and Ramsey counties.  The outlying suburbs in these counties are better...like Plymouth, Maple Grove, Eden Prairie, Eagan, Minnetonka, Excelsior, Woodbury, Mahtomedi.  I know a few pilots that live in the Excelsior/Minnetonka area.  I would also have to say that Hennepin and Ramsey are the most expensive counties to live in in the Twin Cities however your husband is a pilot so im sure that is not a concern :)

  • I live in Woodbury, which is a south east suburb of St. Paul.  There is access to Hwys 94 and 494.  The commute to the airport is roughly 15 - 20 with little traffic to worry about. DH and I have lived in Woodbury for 6+ years now.  We love living here.  Everything is very new and clean.  There is a lot of shopping and restaurants.  St. Paul is about 10 minutes away.  Minneapolis is about 20 minutes away.

  • Richfield is a really nice city and has a great school system as well as close to the airport, main parts of the cities and lakes, etc. I loved it there!
