recommend a chemical-free paint

I'm looking for interior paint that is completely chemical-free (not just VOC free). I'm painting DD's crib, so it's important that it not have any chemicals. I don't mind doing several coats if it's necessary.

I would love it if the paint could be used in a sprayer, but I realize that might not be possible with chemical-free.

The color is white, if that matters.

TIA!

  • I have no idea, but just so you know, most whites are zinc-based. Not sure if that'll be a problem for you or not.

Sorry to be naive, but what is wrong with zinc-based? Will it be okay if DD and I aren't around while it's being painted?

  • It's a heavy metal. And I'm not sure it's possible to seal the zinc onto the wood without the use of chemicals you're probably trying to steer clear of.

I just Googled "too much zinc" and this was the first result:

"Excess amounts of zinc lead can lead to heavy metal poisoning. Aside from vomiting and nausea, this can lead to doziness, a metallic taste in the mouth, low blood pressure, convulsions, shortness of breath and even shock. Emergency treatment for heavy metal zinc poisoning involves fluids like water or milk to flush out the body, medications that counteract the effects of zinc and sometimes removal of the stomach contents.

By the way, why are you looking for "chemical-free" paint? Also, I think I know what you mean by chemical-free, but really, I think there might be a better way to phrase it to actually find what you're looking for because technically, every substance has a chemical makeup. And even if you're going for all natural paint, without anything synthetic, that doesn't always mean it's safe either. [In case you didn't know.]

  • Oops, I meant to paste this one:

Also, just to be clear, I'm not saying all white paint will lead to heavy metal poisoning. I'm just saying that what keeps your baby safe from the zinc in the white paint is usually some food-safe chemical sealant.

Thanks for the great info on the zinc. I have only been able to find it in oil-based paint (and I was planning to use water-based), but I will definitely be sure to check the ingredients before I buy.

I do know that all substances have a chemical make-up, but I've found "chemical-free" to be common terminology when describing safe things such as paint.

  • I'm not sure if this is something that's safe, or that you're interested in, but I just remembered it- there's a thing called "milk paint" that I used once a few years ago. You might want to look it up. What it is is milk protein based paint. But, because of this, you can only get pretty muted colors. I know there is white, though.

I don't know how "chemical-free" [I just don't really know what that means, myself] it is, but it might be worth looking into. I think it uses Lye, though.. and I don't know if lye is caustic just when the paint is in powder and liquid form, or if it's always caustic even after drying.

    Hope that helps!

Oh, and their site says "chemically-safe".. is that what you're interested in?

  • We painted DD's nursery with Mythic paint. I HIGHLY recommend it. It's pretty spendy, but I got it on sale.  It's completely non-toxic... as in, they don't even have to have a warning label on it.  Since it's an interior paint, I bet you could probably spray it.

Since you are just using it for a crib and don't need much, I'd say totally worth it.  Wonderful products.  Great to work with and they have fantastic coverage.  We did primer (they're transitional primer blocks the previous finish so that VOCs from that don't seep out) and then one coat of paint.
