Help?

So.. DF and I have decided to finally have a ceremony! My mom is coming up in August so we thought it would be the perfect time. I'll also be starting the name-change process very soon.

We're planning something small and simple but we're both very excited!

My question is.. in terms of an invitation, I'm clueless! I'm not exactly sure how to word the announcement of our (not legal here in MI).. ceremony.

Any ideas?

we made our invites ( SAVED US A TON OF MONEY) and we just did the same as a reg wedding invite since our parents helped a tad  we added their names. I can scan a copy of our invite - Melanie even lined envelopes

This is similar to the wording we used. We didn't include parents since they weren't giving us away/involved in the planning. Good luck and have fun planning!

  • We had our wedding ceremony and reception in Minnesota (where it's not legally recognized) and we basically decided to do our invitations and everything the way we would have done them if it were legal.  We figured, why let the lack of legal status get in our way of having the ceremony/using the language we prefer to use?  We are fairly traditional people in a lot of ways, and either of us would have had a very traditional wedding if we were marrying men or if we were having our ceremony in a place it was legal. (We are also legally married in Massachusetts, and did include some language in the actual ceremony about the minister blessing the legal marriage solemnized in Massachusetts.)

Our parents did help a lot with the paying, so our invitations had the very traditional: [my parents] and [her parents] request the honor of your presence at the marriage of their daughters [me] and [her].  [info about the location and time].

If people asked, then we explained the legal issues.

Here's a blog post on our invites.

We designed them ourselves and then used www.cardsandpockets.com to print them.

Your blog is great! I'm definitely adding that site to our 'wedding folder' of links. Thanks for the help!

  • J and I did our DP then had our reception a month later, no ceremony.  I have an old crappy cell phone pic of one of the invites but it's hard to read so here is the wording.

This day I will marry my best friend

Hope that you will join in this celebration

  • Weddingpaperdivas.com has some awesome invitations. I went to
"bridal shower" and looked at their least expensive ones... then I changed the wording. I got invitations for less than a dollar each... depending on how many you need it might be worth looking at.

    Congrats!

(Just noticed you said WORDING... not invitations themselves...) Oops! But we kept our wording pretty traditional. To us, its a marriage, no matter what California (or any other state) says.

  • All of you ladies have been so helpful! I'll be showing DF later today and we'll hopefully be starting our invites.

    So excited!

  • Congrats! That's so fun. I echo the others that you get to choose on formal/informal and the wording you use...we had a formal church wedding in Minnesota (not legal)..and used language that a legal wedding would have.

Another tip might be to use the website www.vistaprint.com  We made our save the dates, thank you cards, and our invitations on that site. It is extremely easy, has a ton of templates, and is really really cheap.  You can always get added discounts, too, if you google "coupon code vistaprint"...to make it even cheaper.

    Hope that helps!

  • You probably already know this, but you might want to check out theknot. They changed the board name from same-sex weddings to gay weddings I think.

We did traditional invites and a "nonlegal" fairly traditional wedding in Ohio followed by a 4 person legal ceremony in Massachusetts. Congrats!

  • We were pretty insistent that our celebration wasn't a wedding, so we just said "please join us as we celebrate our love and commitment" on the invitation.

We used weddingpaperdivas.com, and we were really happy with the product and the service.
