High-Risk Pregnancy

High blood pressure, just classified as high risk

Hi Everyone,

Since becoming pregnant my blood pressure has been really high. I normally have nice low blood pressure. I haven't tested positive for pre-eclampsia yet, but it sounds like my dr thinks I will eventually. I'm waiting for some results before they refer me to a specialist. There has been some talk of modified activity or eventual bedrest. Anyone here end up on bedrest with just high blood pressure and no other issues? I'm terribly worried and I'm sure that doesn't help the situation. Any insight from someone who has had a similar experience would be much appreciated!

 Thanks!

  • I would think that your doctor would medicate you before he puts you on bedrest.  I had high blood pressure with my last pregnancy and have it again with this one.  I ended up on bedrest for two weeks before I had my baby at 36 and half weeks (due to pre-e and low amniotic fluid).  One reason that I was put on bedrest is because protein was found in my urine.  This did not escalate to Pre-e until I was 36 and half weeks.  So, for me, it was the very high blood pressure + a significant amount of protein in my urine.  I have recently searched on this site for the Brewer's diet, a high protein diet, that many say helps to prevent pre-e.  I'm not really sure of what, if anything, you can do to prevent it. I'm currently on hbp medicine and taking one baby aspirin a day- per my doctor's request. Take it easy and get some rest.

  • I have been on HBP medicine from 8 weeks pregnant forward. My blood pressure keeps climbing so my OB upped my dosage. As long as you do not have protein any your urine or any other symptoms then you could just have high blood pressure. My OB has been very calming and has assured me that many women have had full term pregnancies with high blood pressure. She told me to just keep an eye on my blood pressure and make sure it doesn't dramatically increase and to keep an eye on my hands, feet and ankles to watch out for swelling.

  • My BP spiked around 23 or 24 weeks.  I also had major swelling.  I was put on bed rest for a bit, but it didn't end up helping.  Now I am on BP meds and also bed rest.  It isn't helping a ton since I still get high BP readings.  My protein is usually in the high 200's, so not quite there for Pre e.  Just trucking along now, trying to make it to 37 weeks before anything else happens.
