S/O -- Who doesn't like "branded" stuff?

I can't stand it!  I don't want to turn my kids into walking ads for Disney or Dora the Explorer or Thomas the Train or what-have-you.

Anything that anybody's given us that's got a character on it gets returned straightaway.

Oh, and we don't own ANY children's DVDs.

I'm such a mean grinchy mom.

  • I'm not a big fan of big branded stuff. Lil stuff yah but I don't always put William on character stuff.
  • Loading the player...
  • Me either, but my biggest pet peeve is CLOTHES with characters on them. I can deal with toys or dvds, etc.

  • Ok...I was the same exact way until my boys started getting into Elmo. I swore I would NEVER dress them in anything with a character, but now they are obbessed with Elmo I bought them 2 fleece pull overs for christmas with a big Elmo on it. I would have never thought...
  • ditto katie.  I swore up and down doodle would NEVER wear character clothes...then she loves elmo and abby cadabby and disney.  Then they have disney day at school...i mean what's a girl to do?  She has a few items that have characters on them...sad to admit it, but it works for us...

    remember never say never :-D

  • I don't like it.  I already told DH to tell his mom.  i can see her getting that kind of stuff.
  • She will never own clothes or the like. ? My baby is not a billboard and I am certainly not going to pay Disney so we can advertise for them. ? But she does own the Classical Baby DVD's and we love them. ??
  • haha emily..."never say never"
  • Oh, I never say never, but as long as I'm dressing her, no character clothes.  Smile

  • We don't do character clothes...I'm still holding strong on this at 2 years!

  • I really hate those cheap branded shoes. Is it really necessary for your child to have Dora on her shoes?

We do have the Baby Einstein and Blue's Clues DVDs b/c with DH being out of town 3 days a week, I would go crazy without them and the house would become a bigger disaster than it already is.

  • Ditto on the never say never.

Having 17 nieces and nephews ... I have watched and learned. You never know what your kid is going to like one day ... :o)

I don't understand this statement? you're telling me that if you allow evie to wear a disney shirt (or whatever) you feel like your kid is an advertisment for them? what's the difference when buying a halloween costume or dress up clothes with a character theme? just asking...not trying to start anything :)

  • I don't care for the character clothes either but I have bought some when she was a  newborn. The BRU near us was moving and all the clothes were 60% off and I couldn't resist buying $2-3 character clothes. Can't pass up a good deal

LOL. A true bargain shopper in here!

  • hahaha! Amen on the bargain shopping! If there is a pair of character tennis shoes on clearance for $5 vs. a pair of plain ones for $20 ... guess which ones I am going to buy ...

  • I agree.... I don't like them either.... I've watched families I worked for be very successful with the "no character" rule and I'm confident I can follow through with it as well.

Plus... most of those character obsessions come out of watching TV and I'm not a fan of little kids/babies watching anything.

I also think that the "branded" stuff tends to be waaay worse quality yet more expensive because of the character... I think that's silly.

That is so funny, Karen. I guess it truly is a preference thing, cause I'd just save the $5 and let her wear the shoes she already has. If she didn't have any shoes, I'd keep looking until I found some $5 ones without characters.

Funny how adamant we are about it one way or the other!

  • I don't think I am adamant either way. I don't mind character clothes, but if I have a choice (of two things that are the same price) that's probably not what I would pick. When kids are little older and have their own opinions and wishes, that's another story. :o) If Kate is 4 years old and her only birthday wish is for a Dora outfit with matching tennis shoes and the latest Dora video, then guess what she will probably get. I think a lot of parents do things they swore they'd never do before they had kids.

I guess I don't forsee myself dressing Evie up as a character. ? This year she was just a bee. ? I've never been a fan of logos even for me. ? I just mean that if they want advertising, I am not going to pay them so I can WEAR their advertising. ??

That said, I concur, never say never. ? But as long as I have the say, no characters. ? I realize someday she is going to throw herself on the floor of Target until I buy her a Disney Princess t-shirt.

Also, I don't judge anyone who choses to buy that stuff. ?To each their own. ?My sister did my nieces entire nursery in Classic Pooh. ? ?Its just not my style.?

  • I definitely don't love the character clothes...but I am going to venture to guess that MOST parents don't...the kids see it and want it.  I agree with Aga that most of it is poor quality anyway, and even if it only costs $2 I'm not tempted to buy it (but I'm not the best bargain shopper either, I love Gap and Gymboree, just try to use coupons),

  • Not a fan of the branded stuff....it drives up the price so the manufacturer can pay the royalties....I don't understand why all the diapers have stuff on them...its not like a baby will ask for the elmo diapers.

I avoid it, but never say never is what I have seen from my firends with older kids.
