I've noticed that there are quite a few ladies on these boards from the Dallas area. It is very possible that we will have an opportunity to transfer to Dallas in the next year. So, I have a few questions for the Dallas ladies:
- Do you like living in Dallas overall?
- Were you born and raised there? Were you transferred there?
- If you transferred from the northeast or midwest, was it an adjustment moving there? How is it different?
- What are your favorite activities to do with your kids?
- How do you like the weather? Does everyone have a pool?
Thanks in advance!
Re: If you live in Dallas
I've lived here my entire life (minus college). My parents, grandparents, aunts/uncles, etc all live(d) here too.
Dallas has a TON to offer for families. The Dallas Ft. Worth metroplex is gigantic with a ton of opinions for living - downtown, uptown, kind of suburban, really suburban, country, etc. There are museums, attractions, a million restaurants and shopping, zoos/aquariums, parks/playgrounds, and on and on. There is a lot to do and a lot of options regarding the type of setting you want to live in.
It gets freaking hot in the summer. I hate it, to be honest. But the spring and fall are lovely weather-wise and the winters are nice. I could do more cold and more snow than what we get, but we get some.
There are plenty of pools, but no not everyone has a pool.
Unless you live downtown, you need cars. Public transportation has gotten better, but isn't extremely functional for most people for everyday use. Everything is spread out and requires driving.

I live in Dallas but I'm not from here. I am from TX, San Antonio but have also lived in Hawaii, Shreveport, Italy, Phoenix, England & Atlanta. I love Texas but I think you will get that from most people born in TX!
Dallas is a pretty good place to live. It is really spread out, & that can be a downfall depending on where you end up living. I've lived in a few large cities & they are pretty much all the same. Have the same type stores, can get the same retail or food items, things like that. Texas in general is extremely friendly compared to the places I've lived in. I would say the only down fall is it's hot, humid & no where near an ocean! You can get a lot of house for the money of course depending on where you are coming from.
There is always something to do with LO's. If it's summer time & doesn't involve water then I keep it to indoor thins. I'm taking DD to a butterfly exhibit this afternoon at a local mall where you can go in & they fly all around & even land on you!
I do have a pool in my back yard which is great but my subdivision has one too with a splash area for kids. Most of the newer subdivision have community pools in them.
Sorry if there are typo's I'm in a rush this morning :-) Oh & the Dallas local board is soooo slow!!!!
What a range of places, lol. I bet Italy and Shreveport were pretty similar
I don't live in Dallas anymore but I lived there all through middle and high school and part of college. We lived in Plano, which is North of Dallas. Took about 20 minutes to commute in I think? None of us actually worked in Dallas proper, just needed easy access to the airport. I miss it. A lot. Except for the heat. Summer is pretty brutal but the rest of the year isn't too bad. Traffic there was pretty good but you can't be a timid driver - Texans drive FAST. You definitely need a car. Like PP said, everything is pretty spread out.
Not everybody had a pool but it's definitely worth having one. It will get plenty of use. I didn't have any LOs when we lived there but I know my parents were very happy with the schools and my younger siblings were involved in plenty of activities. People were very friendly - the stereotypes are pretty true in that regard. Honestly, if I found out we had to move back tomorrow I would be totally okay with it, it was a wonderful place to live. ONe thing to be aware of - the houses are cheap (and gorgeous) but the property taxes are VERY high, at least where we lived.
*Ok, I don't live in Dallas, but my SIL lives in that area and moved there from Iowa (also where I am from). I'm going to answer with what she'd say.
She likes it, but misses her friends
Moved there
Weather is the biggest adjustment. Not nearly as cold as in Iowa
My SIL is boring and doesn't do much. I think her favorite thing to do is go to various cafes (she has a DD who is 3) and go for walks when they actually leave the house.
She enjoys the weather a lot and *brags* to her Iowa friends and family. She doesn't have a pool and I don't think EVERYONE has a pool, but her IL's do and they hang out there quite a bit. The entire backyard is *pool*, no grass or anything.

Yea, I went from Honolulu to Shreveport during my jr year in HS, talk about culture shock!
Yes, property taxes are expensive for sure! We don't have a state income tax but the property tax more than makes up for it! You can get most cities property tax rates on their websites.
I live in Prosper which is north of Plano & Frisco and the schools are wonderful! Frisco schools are really good too.
I love living in Dallas. I moved here from the Midwest for college and never left. Now, most of my family lives in the area which is awesome. I didn't really have to get use to anything except the weather. The first summer is a shock, but you really do get use to it. I like the Dallas area because it is very family friendly. There is a ton to do, but like others said everything is really spread out. There is great shopping, restaurants, two zoos, tons of water parks, and great sports teams. Here is a website that gives you an idea of what goes on in the area- https://www.metroplexbaby.com/Scoop.htm
Oh, and we don't have a pool. My parents and a lot of my friends do though, and we belong to a country club so we go often. Most communities have great pools/splash pads that are fairly cheap to belong to. A lot of pools do take up the entire back yards, so it really just depends on what you are looking for in a house.
