How do you get motivated to get healthy?

Mostly... how do you get motivated to work out?

I want to run a 5k before we TTC... and I have in mind when we'd like to TTC... I pretty much need to start training.  I've done THREE workouts in the last two months.  I hate running with the stroller we have (a Maclaren Triumph) and it's so late when DH gets home that I don't want to run then.  But I need to train... I want to be able to fit into my clothes for vacation (I cannot fit into one of my pairs of shorts... and I really need at least one more pair for our trip in July... and I don't want to have to buy the bigger size that I would feel comfortable in right now).  I kind of think I'm going to talk to DH about rewarding me with a "gift certificate" for different pieces of clothing for finishing every 2-3 weeks of couch-2-5k.  (Ex: after 3 weeks, I qualify for a new shirt, after 6 weeks, I can get new shorts, after finishing the 9 week program, I can get a sundress and sandals)

  • It's best for me to make myself accountable by making other people do it with me - hence me trying to get everyone to do 30 day shred after my last pg.  It also helped me to follow a program like that where it was spelled out with exactly what I needed to do.

I haven't started doing anything again this time.  :(  I really need to, but I just don't feel like I want to spend the time yet...

I think that would help me too... I've asked DH MULTIPLE times to go for walks with me in the evenings but he's been getting home late a lot lately and is too tired.  He did agree to keep C on the weekends when I want to go for a walk/run, but beyond that, the most "support" he is sounds like this, "Did you run today?"  which isn't helping me... it makes me want to run less.  :-(

  • *sigh* i don't know... i'm no help bc i ate reeses pb ice cream for breakfast lol.

i think having a support system (friends/family) that will do it with you is the biggest thing that helps.  if it's just you, then that makes it a million times harder.

  • If you want to run a 5k, find one and sign up for it (the commitment on the calendar is always helpful for me). I suggest the earliest one you could reasonably be prepared for so you can't put off the training. If you like the new clothes reward idea, perhaps make it new work out clothes (then you'll be motivated to work out because you have cute new workout clothes you want to wear!).

One thing that seems a bit silly but totally worked for me was a small reward that I could only have after I worked out. I had a favorite body lotion that I LOVED, but was more expensive than I felt was reasonable for just being everyday lotion (I'm pretty frugal and usually buy the least expensive thing that works well for my poor skin). I was only allowed to use it (after showering) after working out. Seeing it sit there on days I skipped my run made me slightly sad and guilty, and it put a smile on my face when I used it (it was nice and luxurious and my favorite scent). Maybe you can find something else like that too that's a slight guilty pleasure/reward?

  • Oh, and scour craigslist for a used jogging stroller. Even a cheap, older one would be better than jogging with a maclaren (which is otherwise a fabulous stroller, of course, but definitely not intended for jogging).
  • my friend recommended sparkpeople.com.... a great website for FREE that has an online support group for whatever your goals.  Check it out if you want.  I have very few friends/family around me and my husband and I work opposite shifts... so I need some sort of support.  Kind of like the bump is for me with parenting advise Big Smile

  • SO bike 20+ miles a day, so I feel like a loser if I don't do a little bit of yoga a few times a week.

Other than that I would probably NEVER exercise to be honest.
