soy and estrogen

anyone nervous about giving their child soy formula. i've done some reading and saw that the estrogen levels in soy formula can be equivelent to giving over 3 birth control pills a day!!!!!!!

has anyone discussed this with their pedi? seems like a bad choice, but i figure many mothers choose it so i am confused on the information being correct or not.

i was considering it b/c my daughter has a cows milk protein allergy, and i believe soy formula is completely cows milk free

Re: soy and estrogen

  • Soy was recommended to us by my pedi due to lactose intolerance.  I did the research and talked to her about these very concerns.  She didn't seem to have a clue as to what I was talking about!  Well, I went ahead and made the switch.  DD did ok on it because it helped her extreme gas issues but she got SO constipated and developed a terrible rash on her face.  She is now on Similac Sensitive and doing great.  I guess the research is still new so many docs are not aware of this??  My sister (who is now 26) was a soy baby and she is fine...who knows??

  • It's not that soy HAS estrogen it is that the isoflavins (or some other science worde) act as estrogen in the body over time. From what I hear from my nutritionist friend it isn't so much a concern in soy formulas as it is soy milks later. Like you shouldn't give your baby soy milk at one year over cow's milk.

  • We don't eat anything with soy in it in our house for this reason.  A good read about soy and why it shouldn't be in our food is called The Whole Soy Story by Dr. Kaayla T Daniel.

My oldest son was allergic to soy and cow's milk.  Not all soy formula is completely dairy-free, so be careful.

This. Soy also contains naturally occurring antinutrients and toxins. In addition, it is probably made from GMO soy.
  • This isn't my board and I'm totally lurking...but I am a 100% anti-soy. A lot of people think I'm nuts, I'm glad to see others agree. I have endometriosis, and soy is a big no-no because of the estrogen. Also, the way it's processed is quite dangerous, and it's one of the biggest GMO crops in the world.

I would be especially scared to give soy formula to a baby girl. Have you tried Similiac Alimentum (sp)? It smells terrible, and it's made from casein. I'm pretty sure it doesn't come in an organic form either, but I would consider that before trying soy.

Good luck, and sorry for being a lurker!

  • I just did a bunch of research on this when the pedi switched DS to soy because he has a sensitivity to something in regular milk-based formula (we aren't sure what yet) and I didn't see anything about estrogen...But he'll stay on soy because he is doing so well on it for only having switched this week. My sister was on soy also and never had a problem...

I have Crohn's Disease and it is aggravated by a soy intolerance.  I never thought about endometriosis.  I need to get my sister on board with my diet.  Maybe it would help her.

And I would make my own liver-based formula before I would give soy formula!
