Changing diapers at night

LO is a pretty good night sleeper. he's actually STTN 8 hours 3 times and 5-6 hours a couple times. I know it could just be a fluke, but I'm embracing it right now. :) I feel stupid asking this... but is there a point where you can just feed them and not change a wet diaper? I know they're peeing a lot now and it will slow down, but I'm not sure if you ever can just feed them and put them back down... Usually at night I grab him out of the pack n' play next to me and fix his bottle (on my nightstand). He eats and falls back asleep and then when I change the diaper he's WIDE awake. Same thing if I change him before feeding. It just wakes him up completely. I obviously don't want diaper rash though! So I just wasn't sure...

Re: Changing diapers at night

  • I do the sniff and squeeze test - I sniff the diaper and if it's really potent I change her; if it passes the sniff test I also squeeze it to see how full it feels. I also use Pampers and they have this ingenious blue line that shows up on where it's wet so I check that as well (if LO's just wearing a onesie, I don't like to disrupt her from sleeping either). Most of the time if she sleeps 4hrs+ it needs to be changed.

  • I've started changing the diaper half-way through the feeding so that she has time to get sleepy again but isn't angry at me for changing it before feeding her lol

And yes, I change her diaper every time she wakes to eat.

  • Worst mom in the world award goes to me. Changing his diaper will wake him totally up, so I don't change it until he's really awake in the morning. I also will just put him down if he falls asleep while eating.

Doesn't seem to bother him about the diaper, and we have the baby dry(dry max? one of those) pampers, so it pulls the moisture away from LO.  No diaper rash so far :)

  • If she wakes up, I change her and then feed her.  With my son, we were given the go ahead to let him sleep as long as he wanted (once he returned to his birth weight).  I usually just but some butt paste on him at bedtime.

Yes bc he poops every time. If I was confident he wasn't pooping I'd let him be. At my mom group the parenting consultant said it is ok to sit in pee but not poop.

DD is a champion pee-er, so there is no question we have to change her. But she sleeps through that pretty well. The only time she really wakes up is if she wets through her onesie and I have to change her whole outfit (doesn't happen often).
  • I agree with pp's - I feed him about 3/4th of the bottle so he'll calm down a bit, then change/burp, and finish the bottle.  This limits the screaming at night and gets him back to sleep faster.

  • Ok, I'll admit and add that there have been a few nights where I've been so exhausted I can't see straight and when he fell back asleep while eating I just put him back in his crib without changing...

I have done this too. But generally I always change her, mostly first before I BF. She's awesome about going back to sleep.

  • I change my LO at every feeding.  What I do is I put a pacifier in her mouth right when I hear her fussing around her feeding time.  Then I change her diaper with pacifier in the mouth & feed her immediately after.  I find that the pacifier doesn't let her wake up all the way & after feeding she is back to sleeping quickly.

  • Recently I feed him one boob, burp, change, feed the other boob.

I change her before feedings. She pees a ton so if i skipped it, I know she'd have a massive leak.

  • Thanks everyone! I'll try doing it in between and see if that helps!

  • We don't change at every feeding. I did with ds (2 years ago) and realized that was silly.  I let ds sttn and his diaper is full in the morning, and he's fine.  I try to change dd's diaper if it's poopy or it's very full (usually one time a night).  I try to change before a feeding or mid way so that she has time to get sleepy again before we're done.

  • I don't change LO when she wakes up at night unless it's super full. No diaper rash and happier mama and LO.

  • I change DS's diaper before every night feeding... Plus if he has any wetness then he's pissy at me. So I have no choice but to change him. But he falls asleep after feeding so I haven't had an issue with him going to sleep.
Except now that he's going through a growth spurt and won't sleep at night.

I change Olivia because I fear diaper rash.  My older DDs never got a diaper rash and I hope Olivia never gets one.  I also use cream on her every change.

  • We change it every time, and wet-wipe even when it's just pee-pee. I don't think it's coincidence that my kids also never, ever have diaper rash. :)
  • I change her when she eats at like 11 or 12 which is when I go to bed. Then I feed her around 4 or 5 but I don't change her unless she's soaked or something. Then H takes her around 8 and changes her/feeds her.
