I am so angry! As some of you may know I work for REI (and so does DH). We are avid outdoor enthusiasts. We ride our bikes a ton, but I have been nervous about getting the infant sling and a Chariot because I just don't trust the drivers here. Yesterday one cyclist was killed in Albuquerque and another, my friend and colleague, was seriously injured.
My friend Matt (he is 36) was riding his bike to work at 9:15am and was struck by a driver who ran a red light. He is in the ICU at UNMH with a head injury. He has had a part of his skull removed to allow his brain to swell to minimize the damage. All we can do now is wait and hope.
The part that makes me even more angry is that the 20 year old who hit Matt, not only left the scene of the accident she hasn't been cited for anything but running a red light. If Matt had not been wearing a proper fitting helmet he mostly likely would have died. The cyclist who did die was hit head on by a 78 year old driver who has not been cited for anything! I am just so angry!
I am hoping that I will here something more about Matt's condition today. I am just at a loss.

Also, one of my friends was hit by a moving van last year. She is only 22 and is now paralyzed on the left side of her face.
Matt is one of the supervisors for REI, and right now one of the other employees is drafting a petition asking that the driver be charged with criminal negligence. As a store (that runs bike safety clinics!...grrrrr! Another reason I am so angry!) we are hoping that we can get the city to make an example out of her. Matt was an exemplary cyclist, he was following all of the rules of the road and should not have to endure this!
