DD sleeps until 10:00-11:00am - WWYD?

DD#1 is 2 years old (~27 months). She sleeps until between 10:00am-11:00am most days. Her "said" bedtime is 7:30pm, but it's usually 8:00-8:30pm until she's in bed with lights out. She also still naps most days for about 2-3 hours. WWYD? I don't mind that she sleeps so late everyday since DD#2 doesn't sleep so well yet through the night so it gives me a break, but we're missing out on a lot of our Moms Club activities. How early do you put your LO down at night?

  • So. .. 14 hours of nighttime sleep, plus another 2-3 hours of nap sleep?

That seems like a lot, but if she's doing OK, I wouldn't sweat it.  What does your doctor say?

  • So she is only awake for about 6-8 hours a day?  What does your pedi think?  I would love it is DS slept more, but really seams like a lot.  Maybe I am just used to a kid that needs more sleep, but my 1 year sleeps less then that.

  • I don't see the problem, especially if you're getting her to bed at a reasonable hour and still getting a nap out of her.

I think it's BS that kids are "supposed" to wake up early. Just because many do, doesn't mean it's abnormal if they don't. DD regularly sleeps until about 9:30 am or even as late as 10 unless I have to wake her up to go to school or elsewhere. I relish my mornings to myself.

  • Now I'm worried :/. I haven't discussed it with my doctor. We don't go back until she is 3. Maybe next time I take DD#2 I'll mention it to her and see what she says.

  • DS got anywhere from 15-17 hours of sleep per day until about 3.5. Now at 5, he gets 12 which is still a bit more than some of his peers, but he's completely healthy. As long as she's not lethargic, I'd say she's doing fine. I think the majority of american children don't get enough sleep.

  • Oh gosh, if DD did that just once and timed it for a Saturday I would be the happiest woman on Earth for a day. I can see why you are concerned though and would run it by your pedi.

  • My DS is 3 and sleeps almost as much, about 12 hrs at night and a 2 hr nap somedays.  He is very busy in his time awake so he really needs to get his sleep.  Maybe try cutting her nap to 2 hrs and going to bed slightly earlier?
  • DS went through a period when he would sleep 12-14 hrs a night with a 2 hour nap during the day. It lasted for about 1-2 months. I am not sure if it was a really long growth spurt type thing, or if his body was adjusting to new skills he was learning or what. But then he cut it down to 10-12 and maybe an hour nap. Now he wakes up at the freakin butt crack of dawn most days and doesn't nap. What I wouldn't do for a wake up that involved daylight, and even better 9am on the clock!

So I say just give her some time.
