Vitamin D supplement drops- are you doing them?

At DD's 2 wk pedi appt, he gave me a sample box of Vitamin D supplement drops (D-Vi-Sol) to use - 1 ml per day. He said there's been a lot of recent studies about how breastfeeding babies aren't getting enough of the vitamin bc of how variable it is, w/how much the mother actually absorbs. I tried them and they are SO strongly flavored (fruity! but strong) that I know DD will hate.

Are you using them, if you breastfeed?

Re: Vitamin D supplement drops- are you doing them?

  • My doctor told us to give DS these also and we've been using them for 2 weeks.  To be honest I forget to give him them about every other day - but some is better than none I guess.  I thought he would hate it too, but he doesn't seem to mind.  However about 3 times now as soon as we give the drops to him he pukes.  I'm not sure if it is because his tummy was already full and the extra 1mL was too much or if he choked on it a little or what.  I hate giving it to him more than he hates taking it and we are working on getting a better system down.

  • I breastfeed, and our pedi also suggested using them. DS seems to actually enjoy the taste. He gets them every day, though I think I've forgotten maybe twice since he's been born.

  • Interesting.  DS has been to the DR twice, and they haven't mentioned anything of the sort...

We don't.  I've talked to our ped a lot about this and because we get so much sunshine here in CO, there really isn't a need for us to supplement with the drops.

We use Poly-Vi-Sol.  DS's pedi suggests them regardless of BF or FF.
  • we are using them. We don't get a lot of sun in oregon, for one, And I didn't feel this was excessive. the drop we have are vit A, D, and C. She spit it up the first day, but since then she has done awesome!

  • Our DD2's NP suggested them since we BF, but stated that it was totally up to us.  We chose to purchase them, but don't give them everyday.  Most sunny days we spend time in the afternoon in our backyard while DD1 plays, so we feel she gets some Vit D from the sun.  We think of it as back-up, especially going into summer.

  • Our pedi recommended them, but we tried poly-vi-sol and d-vi-sol, and both made the babies super fussy.  I recently bought Carlson's Baby D drops.  They only need one drop a day, and they don't have any artificial flavors or colors.  They are expensive, but the bottle lasts a whole year.  I just put a drop on my nipple before breastfeeding.

Every time we gave it to Olivia she was extremely fussy.  I can not tolerate any vitamins, it took me over a month to have the prenatal ones feel ok in my system.  I just assume its the same with Olivia.  She goes on Wednesday for her 2 month and I'll ask about it then.

I'm from CO originally too! I'd love to move back but my family and DHs family are in Ohio now and I want my kids to be close to their grandparents. Sigh.
