I dread middle of the night feedings because....

... My DS cannot stay awake! Last night he woke up at 2:30 am and I began nursing after a diaper change. By 2:40 am and after only a few good "sucks", he was asleep. I tried burping him, blowing in his face, taking him out of his swaddle, turning the light on, the magic "M" (where you hold them and make an M in the air - the LC at the hospital taught me this). Nothing. He was passed out. I knew he was hungry, but I was tired so I laid him back down in his crib and within 5 minutes, he was awake again and crying because he was hungry. We did this until almost 4:30, where I finally let him CIO for a few minutes before he fell asleep until 7:30 am.

Does anyone have any suggestions, or anyone going through the same thing??? I do have some BM bottles in the fridge I suppose I could try in case nursing him makes him just so comfy he would rather sleep.

  • What about a pacifier? Mine did this a few times before he started to fully sttn. I would just rock with the pacifier and if after 10 minutes or so he was still awake/fussy I'd feed.
Baby, you've got the sort of eyes that tell me tales...

  • That sounds like my night last night! He had been sleeping so well lately, but last night he kept falling asleep during feedings before he was really done, and so he ended up being up every 1.5 - 2 hours!

He's been doing it today during the day, too. I feel like I'm feeding him constantly but only for like 5-10 minutes at a time.

I'm hoping this is just a phase! I'm going back to work next week so it should be interesting to see how he does...
