Can babies sleep alone in adult beds?

SIDS? Getting smushed? Suffocating?

Last night DD had a crying fit in her RnP (arched back, top-of-her-lungs screaming), but she was totally cool when I laid her on our bed. I took away all the sheets, pillows and blankets that could have harmed her, but I just couldn't convince myself she would be ok. I laid awake for about an hour watching her before I put her back in the RnP. Did I have anything to worry about on the bed??

  • It's fine!  Lots of people co-sleep with their babies, even though it's not recommended by the pediatric association, and their babies are okay.  I think you just have to do whatever you have to do so that both you and your baby are getting enough sleep.  DS sleeps in his own room, but some mornings if he wakes up especially early, I'll just bring him in our bed, feed him and let him fall back asleep.

Agreed. We cosleep with DD in the middle of us. It's not recommended, but we are safe about it and it works for us. DD is 6 weeks and STTN (9:30p-5:30a). I EBF and it's a whole lot easier to have her in the bed with us if she does wake up to eat.

  • I have let DD nap on our bed (I so wish I could stay there with her when we fall asleep together after that first nursing in the morning, but my boys need me), and she's been fine.  She's in the middle of a king-sized mattress, with all bedding and pillows moved away, and I have a monitor set up anyway so I can check her (because her co-sleeper basinett is in there, too, and we like to be able to check on her at night before we come to bed).

  • I think it's completely fine unless you have a water bed. Our king mattress is a Tempur-Pedic so LO isn't going anywhere once we lay him down.

We cosleep after his 4am feeding and we love it.

  • DS sleeps in our bed during the day while I am busy. I just make the bed and lay him in the middle. We have a queen size bed. I lay pillows around the edge just incase he was to roll or move himself, we have had no issues I just check on him A LOT.

  • DD sleeps in our bed all night most nights, you just have to be safe about it. On the nights she sleeps in her crib, she wakes up around 5am for a feeding, I bring her into our bed and nurse her in the side lying position and we both drift off to sleep and we let her stay there the rest of the morning.

On week days after she has eaten in bed and gone back to sleep DH and I get up and get ready for work in the master bathroom, I poke my head in several times to check on her. She is always just fine.

  • G sleeps in our bed all the time. I make sure to move blankets, pillows, etc out of the way and he's just fine. I do use little wing things that he lays between (not sure what they're called) so that he doesn't roll around when I get in and out of the bed. It makes getting up in the night so much easier. When he naps in there alone, I just make sure to check on him every few minutes.

Yeah. I don't think it's safe. You are supposed to use a very firm mattress in LO crib. If your mattress is comfy for you, it's too soft for baby.

  • I don't feel comfortable leaving her alone on the bed to sleep by herself if I'm sleeping somewhere else (like in the guest bed with DH and DS, lol - it's complicated).  But if I'm awake (checking on her frequently) or sleeping next to her, most definitely.

You had nothing to worry about on the bed.  I sleep with DD every night (side-lying BF is my savior).

  • I think it's ok.  DD sleeps in bed with us all night and we leave her there in the morning if she's not ready to get up yet.  But it depends on how much of a worrier you are.  All the books say not to because of the risk of suffocation on the soft bedding or rolling off.  I personally am comfortable with taking those risks because I have watched DD sleep and know that she'll scream if she rolls onto her face, and she's not mobile enough to roll over near the edge of the bed.  But some parents would always err on the side of caution and not take the risk at all.
