3rd Trimester

Pregnancy Insomnia

Anyone else? I can't sleep for the life of me. I will be up at 4am wide awake. It's not like I'm uncomfortable (well sometimes) but I just can't sleep. I'm laying there trying to sleep but I have enough energy to get up and clean or do something! My doctor told me I could take benedryl, unisom, or tylenol pm. Last night was the first time in a week that I didn't take it (just because I wanted to see if I could sleep w/o it). Nope- I was up all night and probably feel asleep after 5:30 and awake at 9am.

Anyone else having pregnancy insomnia? My doctor said it's normal and to chalk it up to hormones. It's my body's way of getting used to not sleeping. I had never heard of this...

Yeah, it is horrible. I get up every night at 3 AM like clockwork for at least an hour and I am exhausted all the next day. I really don't want to take anything for it though, because we have a high risk pregnancy and I have not taken any over the counter medications for the entire pregnancy so I really don't want to start now... I am just going to suck it up, I only have a few weeks left anyway because we have a scheduled C section so my end date is in sight!!

  • Yup I average 3-4 hours a night, not combined. It sucks!
  • I almost didnt even read your post...opened it and was just going to reply "Count me in!"

It has been horrible the past few nights, waking up around 1:00 a.m. and staying awake until around 4:00.

Sorry, I thought I was on the 2nd Tri board! But yes I do have it already!

  • Yes, I'm up for a minimum of 2 hours every night. Sucks! I don't want to take meds either, so I just deal.

  • yup, same here...

i'm not going to bed until midnight-ish, waking up around 5am and not really falling back asleep

i also have a ton of stuff on my mind so that's probably not helping

i'm all messed up though because now it's causing me to take a nap during the day in the late afternoon. i'm trying to cut out my naps so i'll sleep, but it doesn't seem to matter Stick out tongue

i do take a tylenol pm once or twice a week, but i don't think it really helps either...

    just one of those things!!

  • Me too...I get so uncomfortable at night..I'm lucky to fall asleep and then always wake up at least two hours later, unable to fall back asleep again. I haven't asked the doctor about it though because I just figured it was normal

  • Same here...it is really hard to work 5 days a weeks and stay awake when I get so little sleep at night.

Can't wait til i'm on mat leave.

  • Yep, I've been having tons of trouble sleeping too.  Even when I do take tylenol pm, I still don't sleep that well.

  • I remember hating this because if you mention it to anyone they just say "oh wait til you have your baby- talk about no sleep"....it's so different once the baby is around....yeah, you have to get up, but it was way worse when you couldn't sleep while pregnant and you're sooooo uncomfortable and you don't have your baby to hold yet!  GL- hope you get some rest soon :)

  • I haven't had a good sleep in about 2 months. It's awful. I actually really hate bed time. Between the horrible pelvic pain, having to get up every 2 hours to pee, and just laying there, staring at the wall, I could do without it.

  • Every night for the past 2 weeks I have been on a strange sleep cycle.

    Wake up at 11am.
    Nap at 6pm-8pm.
    Awake until at least 5am.
    Sleep until 11am.

    It's lots of fun.
    Not.
I have been watching Law & Order and DVRing stupid shows throughout the day just so I have something to watch at night.

  • I had the same issue last night---I've been up since around 230 this morning. It stinks. I really don't wanna take any medication---hopefully I'll sleep this weekend when DH is at work (with any luck).

Everyone has told me that it is just God's funny way of getting you use to no sleep.

  • Yay, I am totally not alone, however try not to avoid the naps. According to my OB taking the naps will help when the baby is here, because you will nap when LO naps and this will get your body use to the new sleep pattern. I know it seems like clock work between 1-4pm I take a nap lately
  • yes! it started right when I got pregnant - like literally the same day cuz its been a while! but i started waking up at like 4am/4:30/5 now im waking up at 2:30 and wide awake doing everything - listinging to soft music - smelling lavender oil(supposed to calm you and make you go to sleep) even wearing those eye masks! nothing has worked and I dont get back to sleep until 5:30/6 then am up by 8 but feel really groggy and dont want to get up :( i like to think my baby is awake then too but maybe its just hormones getting me ready for sleepless nights??! anyone have an answer as to why this occurs - anyway its 5:40am now ive been up since 2 so i am gonna try and go back to sleep now - for a whole hour- wish me luck!
