solids - wwyd?

we've found out Eliza's horrific night wakings were caused by eating solids.  We've stopped feeding her solids the past two days and she's STTN.

She wasn't much interested in them at six months, but now, at almost eight, she was going crazy for them.  So she eats about two or three tablespoons once, sometimes, twice a day.

We're going to try yogurt this weekend and see if the good things in it help make her adjustment to solids easier, but I'm totally baffled as to what to do since Marion was on three meals a day by this age with no problems.

Anyone else have a baby that you did delayed solids with?  Any idea how long this will last?

I hate keeping the food from her, since she goes nutso when we eat, but I also hate hearing her in awful pain a few hours later from eating

Re: solids - wwyd?

  • Can you maybe just feed solids for breakfast and lunch, and skip the dinner. Hopefully by then some of the gassiness (or whatever is keeping her up) has passed during the day and she can STTN on the milk at night only.  Have you linked it to a specific food?  Maybe an allergy/gassiness/other reaction to a specific food that you could avoid?

These are very good questions. Also, have you tried giving her Mylecon after her last meal?

  • The only foods we've given so far have been banana, sweet potato, avocado, oatmeal & yogurt.  We've been adding oatmeal to the foods for a few extra calories since she's still so far down her growth curve, but I know kids often have problems with that, so we dropped it a few days ago and she still had problems on just sweet potatoes.

We have been giving her tons of gas drops and they don't really do anything for her except distract her for a few minutes because of the taste.

And we gave her food for lunch a few days in a row and it screwed up her afternoon nap because she was in too much pain to sleep.  She stiffens her entire body and just screams, which makes the gas issues worse of course.  And she goes too stiff to even bicycle her legs, so they only thing I've been able to do is put her in my wrap and carry her around upright until it passes.

  • Oh my, poor baby.  I don't have any advice, but we started solids at 4 months with Dylan, and it went great.  Braylon has major stomach issues, and I'm afraid he'll react the same way Eliza is.  I'm curious to see what the solution is for her.  Have you talked to her pedi?

  • Is she being followed by a pediatric gastroenterologist?  That sounds like a very severe reaction to solids and I wonder if there may be something other than gas that's causing it.  Not trying to be alarmist but what you described doesn't sound normal, especially if she's also having weight gain issues.

  • no, I need to take her to the pedi I guess.  I could try calling & leaving a message for the nurse, but I'm sure they'll just tell me to come on in.

for moms that have dealt with reflux, would reflux cause this - without creating any additional spit up issues?

It very well could. Is she on meds for reflux?  I think if I were you, I'd take her to a pedi GI to be thorough and make sure nothing else is going on.  Good luck and keep us updated.

She had some ear infections, right? Mathis ended up with yeast in his system due to antibiotics from multiple ear infections (the way we can get yeast infections when we are on them too).

I only found this out by going to a homeopath. My pedi was at a loss about why he wasn't sleeping after we tried a couple of things, but it's so hard with babies since they can't really tell you what they feel. This included going back to all the reflux precautions we had been taking and that didn't help (I thought this was weird because all you ever hear is to start reflux babies on solids early b/c it helps). We just know they feel bad. Anyway, I took him to Heights of Health and they determined it was yeast in his GI track. They gave me some drops, which I had to put in a little juice and give to him. Less than a week later he was feeling so much better and STTN again! It was a freaking miracle. You might consider something like that.

This is my thought. I'd definitely want to get things checked out.

We're lucky that Viv has no issues and eats like a horse with little reaction. Her main issue is she tends to get constipated.

  • Well the sleeping thing went something like, STTN from 6 weeks plus, then the 4 month wakeful, then back to STTN, the the weight loss, so we started waking her up to eat once a night.  Once she got my supply back up, she was up twice a night (doable) and would go right back to sleep.  When she started showing a marked interest in solids, we upped her intake and then she started waking every 90 minutes - 2 hours and would be screaming in pain, not nursing, and take forever to get back down.  Stopped the solids, and she's back to one wake up at 10/11 p.m. then STTN until 7:30 a.m. or so.

And she's had just one ear infection (diagnosed at least, who knows if she's had more.)

So question about seeing the pedi, since we go to a large practice.  Would you go to just any doctor in the practice if you could see them soon (like on Monday) or would you wait until you could see your pedi (which could take several weeks to get in)

  • And no, she's not on meds for reflux.  She was gaining weight just fine and it didn't seem to cause her pain, she just spit up all.the.time.

The weight loss issues we had were not related to her reflux (at least not obviously) but rather to a lack of appetite due to illness which made my supply drop which made her just a bit lethargic so she didn't want to nurse and put us in the middle of a vicious cycle.

But, she sounds permanently congested, which, when I've brought it up to our pediatrician before, he's just said, well that's the way it is with second kids, even though she's not necessarily showed any other signs of having a cold (like a runny nose) it's just the permanent congestion sound in her nasal cavities.  And I swear, if this somehow turns out to be reflux related that's gone undiagnosed for almost eight months, hell will have no fury

    my goodness, hugs to you!!

i agree with kkmmex, and would get her in to see a pedi gi.

maddy had reflux, with no spitup - we saw a chiro, which worked wonders for her.

This raises red flags for me...  Go see a different pedi or a pedi GI.  Braylon was always congested too, and the pedi said it's related to the reflux.  Once he was on prevacid for about a week, it started getting better.  He sometimes sounds congested still but it's much better.

several weeks? really?  I would get in to see the one you can, and then switch to our group! I can't imagine having to wait that long.

Ditto. Evan has had tons of congestion and it was from his reflux. He is still on reflux meds and has a lot less congestion, but this is also what has led to his recurring ear infections, thus requiring tubes. I'd get a second opinion.
