Night #1 of Weaning=

No fun.

We've been down to only nursing to sleep for months (like 6).  Since we are going away next weekend without the kids, I decided that now was the time to finally wean since I've been talking about for 3 months.

Usually after books with Eli, I take Evan out to the living room where I put him in his sleepsack and we nurse.  Afterwards I either put him to bed if he falls asleep or we rock for a while...sometimes I lay him down awake too so I didn't think it would be too bad.

I thought I would just follow our nap routine so instead of going to the living room we went to his room to read more books.  Well as soon as he realized we weren't going to the living room he was not happy and tears ensued.  I felt so bad.  It only took a few minutes to redirect him to the books and he calmed down.  Then he tried to leave his room again after we were done with the books and ready to rock.  Another couple of minutes of fussing and he let me rock him to sleep.  Luckily, there were no indications that he wanted to nurse (pulling at my shirt, saying milk, etc)- he seemed more upset about changing the normal routine.

Rough stuff, ladies.  I hope he'll adapt to this new routine quickly because it's making me feel like crap.

  • Oh, that is hard! But hopefully he adjusts very quickly since he didn't ask to nurse. DS1 was pretty easy but we did use a bottle instead of nursing for a while. GL!

  • DD was just like your DS. So, instead of nursing I did everything as normal and just rocked her. It went so much easier that way than by changing her routine by going to another room ect. GL that tonight goes better.
  • {{hugs}}  I'm sure it will get better quickly.

  • Can you introduce something else?  Not a lovey, but another piece of the routine?  I've replaced nursing with singing to DS.  Three rounds of rock-a-bye baby and hen 3 rounds hummed instead of sung... and then I leave the room.  SOmetimes earlier if he seems ready.  Sometimes I rock him if he's extremely unsettled, but most of the time we just talk softly about going to bed while we're dressing him in jammies and reading a book.
