Any opinions on whether the baby bjorn is a useful item, or a waste? Also, what's the general opinion on baby bjorn, as opposed to other carriers. I want a carrier that is daddy friendly ... suggestions?

Re: baby bjorn - useful or waste?
In general you want a baby carrier that will support the hip joints and keep the legs from dangling. This will be better for the baby in the long run.
If you want a daddy friendly carrier, take dad and have him try them on. Each person is different and will prefer a slightly different carrier, that's why they make so many!
We never used a carrier with DS and still don't see it as a necessity. We just use a stroller.
I get the whole baby wearing concept it (a carrier) just was never on our list of must haves.
But from the people I know who have used it...they have all raved about it!
We got a hand-me-down bjorn that we used when DD was very young. The pros were that it is easy to use with an infant and she could be worn facing out, which she enjoyed. The cons were pretty much what others have already mentioned--not very comfortable for my back and not great for her hips. Honestly, though, I didn't worry about the hip thing too much since she wasn't in it all the time anyway. At least for me, the bjorn would not be worth the money to buy new. It is not comfortable and does not last long enough to justify paying full price.
We also got an ergo, which we can still use now and DD is almost 2.5. The pros of the ergo are that it distributes her weight better, which makes it easier on my body to carry her; there are a variety of ways to use it; it's pretty lightweight and easy to bring with you anywhere. The cons are that it's not super breathable in warm weather, it's impossible for the child to face forward while on your chest, and it can be a bit more tricky to use with an infant. For me, the ergo was worth every penny.
I am a huge fan of carriers. I prefer it to a stroll in most situations b/c it keeps LO close and makes it harder for others to get in her face, it not big and bulky, it's lightweight, and DD likes it better. I used it for running errands as well as getting stuff done around the house when she was younger. Now we just use it for longer trips when we know she might get tired from walking the whole way. There are lots of other carrier options, so you might want to do a little looking online with DH to see what he thinks he'd be comfortable using.
Lurker, but I highly recommend doing some research on carriers. Since I was pregnant with DS I have had multiple carriers. Hands down for a structured carrier I'd go with an Ergo. It's easy to use and even my DH loves it. Someone mentioned that they didn't like the fact that you can't do a forward carry with it though, and I wanted to say that there is a lot of research that says that babies/infants should not face forward because if they become overstimulated they can't "hide" or turn away. This is why facing you is so important, they can "control" their environment better. You can also do a back or side carry with the ergo too, by just moving around the straps a bit.
Alright, I'll step down of my soapbox and return to lurkdom... :-/
My DD hated it. We are probably going to get one from catbirdbaby.com...a good friend of mine lives in NYC so carriers are essential and she said this is very popular with Mom's in the city (after many trial and errors).
Her son loved it.
I wouldn't spend any money on it, since everyone I know that had one says it's useless once the baby is more than a few months old. I plan to borrow a friend's for the first couple of months.
I have an Ergo, and I don't care for the infant insert, especially not for a July baby. I will switch to the Ergo once the baby is old enough to use it without the insert. I LOVE the Ergo, and DH uses it as well. Still comfy with our 35 lb 2 year old. Highly recommend you invest your money in that one and borrow or buy a cheap used sling or carrier for the newborn stage.
In some slings you can do the kangaroo hold which will face baby out WITHOUT messing up their hips.

Before you buy one make sure to look to see if the babies legs hang straight down or not. (A lot of bjorn carriers are like this) It also puts pressure on the gentials of the baby and if its a boy could lead to sterilization from all the pressure.
Love the Ergo and it got really good reviews. Hope that helps GL!
