baby bjorn - useful or waste?

Any opinions on whether the baby bjorn is a useful item, or a waste? Also, what's the general opinion on baby bjorn, as opposed to other carriers. I want a carrier that is daddy friendly ... suggestions?

  • AMAZING. A must have. We have a jeep brand one that someone bought us. Wearing a baby is great.

  • In general you want a baby carrier that will support the hip joints and keep the legs from dangling.  This will be better for the baby in the long run.

If you want a daddy friendly carrier, take dad and have him try them on.  Each person is different and will prefer a slightly different carrier, that's why they make so many!

  • The Baby Bjorn was good for when DS was an infant, but when he got bigger it really hurt my back. I ended up selling it on Craigslist and getting a Ergo. Love the Ergo, although I have yet to use it with an infant.

  • The Baby Bjorn is actually awful on a baby's spine and hip development.  It's also one of the most painful carriers to use on your own back as it doesn't spread the weight out evenly.  If you want a carrier that both you and your DH can use try the Ergo.  It's more expensive, but it'll last way longer and can do back carries (which are awesome with a toddler).

  • We never used a carrier with DS and still don't see it as a necessity.  We just use a stroller.

I get the whole baby wearing concept it (a carrier) just was never on our list of must haves.

But from the people I know who have used it...they have all raved about it!

  • Do an Ergo or Beco (Butterfly or Gemini).  It will last MUCH longer and it is pretty much the same idea, but better.  The Bjorn gets really uncomfortable and hurts the back only a month or two in.  It just doesn't keep the baby close enough to your body so it really hurts your back even when LO only weighs a little over 10lbs.

  • I borrowed from friends to test the baby bjorn & an Ergo -- using another friend's infant as a "model" lol -- Ergo won hands down b/c it was so much more comfortable for me (my back killed w/ the baby bjorn after a short time) & from what I've heard, it's better for baby too.  The extra $ is worth it b/c you can use it way longer!!
  • I don't know from personal experience yet (we have a Bjorn but not baby yet to try with) BUT I met a man in a store recently who was wearing a Chicco baby carrier that looked amazing regarding support for his back. I asked him about it and he said some of the Bjorns also have good back support -depends on which one you get.  His Chicco looked great though so I would definitely do some research on this. I wish I had before we registered.

    Yes

  • We got a hand-me-down bjorn that we used when DD was very young.  The pros were that it is easy to use with an infant and she could be worn facing out, which she enjoyed.  The cons were pretty much what others have already mentioned--not very comfortable for my back and not great for her hips.  Honestly, though, I didn't worry about the hip thing too much since she wasn't in it all the time anyway.  At least for me, the bjorn would not be worth the money to buy new.  It is not comfortable and does not last long enough to justify paying full price.

We also got an ergo, which we can still use now and DD is almost 2.5.  The pros of the ergo are that it distributes her weight better, which makes it easier on my body to carry her; there are a variety of ways to use it; it's pretty lightweight and easy to bring with you anywhere.  The cons are that it's not super breathable in warm weather, it's impossible for the child to face forward while on your chest, and it can be a bit more tricky to use with an infant.  For me, the ergo was worth every penny.

I am a huge fan of carriers.  I prefer it to a stroll in most situations b/c it keeps LO close and makes it harder for others to get in her face, it not big and bulky, it's lightweight, and DD likes it better.  I used it for running errands as well as getting stuff done around the house when she was younger.  Now we just use it for longer trips when we know she might get tired from walking the whole way.  There are lots of other carrier options, so you might want to do a little looking online with DH to see what he thinks he'd be comfortable using.

A baby carrier is an absolute MUST IMO. I wore DS for the first 7 months of his life everyday for hours, and I wore him up until he was about 2. I wouldn't go Baby Bjorn though. I would get an Ergo carrier. But I would definitely spend the money to get a carrier. BTW, they have Ergos on Babysteals pretty often (they might even be in the archive), and they are 45% off.
  • Lurker, but I highly recommend doing some research on carriers. Since I was pregnant with DS I have had multiple carriers. Hands down for a structured carrier I'd go with an Ergo. It's easy to use and even my DH loves it. Someone mentioned that they didn't like the fact that you can't do a forward carry with it though, and I wanted to say that there is a lot of research that says that babies/infants should not face forward because if they become overstimulated they can't "hide" or turn away. This is why facing you is so important, they can "control" their environment better. You can also do a back or side carry with the ergo too, by just moving around the straps a bit.

Alright, I'll step down of my soapbox and return to lurkdom... :-/

  • We got an Ergo Baby after reading countless reviews. It's supposed to be MUCH more comfortable :)

  • My DD hated it. We are probably going to get one from catbirdbaby.com...a good friend of mine lives in NYC so carriers are essential and she said this is very popular with Mom's in the city (after many trial and errors).

    Her son loved it.

  • I wouldn't spend any money on it, since everyone I know that had one says it's useless once the baby is more than a few months old.  I plan to borrow a friend's for the first couple of months.

I have an Ergo, and I don't care for the infant insert, especially not for a July baby. I will switch to the Ergo once the baby is old enough to use it without the insert.  I LOVE the Ergo, and DH uses it as well. Still comfy with our 35 lb 2 year old. Highly recommend you invest your money in that one and borrow or buy a cheap used sling or carrier for the newborn stage.

  • Loved ours.  We had several baby carriers - slings, ERGO, baby bjorn, etc.  In the end DD just preferred the Bjorn since she could face out.  She was in slings when she was little, but later on it was the bjorn or nothing.  The ERGO was great - she just wanted to face out and would squirm and cry until we switched to the bjorn.

In some slings you can do the kangaroo hold which will face baby out WITHOUT messing up their hips.

  • Love, love, love the baby bjorn!!! I used it for both of my sons and it was totally worn out so I had to trash it. One of the very few things I have to buy for baby boy #3 :) Would not have a baby without one. DH loved it too.

  • Before you buy one make sure to look to see if the babies legs hang straight down or not.  (A lot of bjorn carriers are like this)  It also puts pressure on the gentials of the baby and if its a boy could lead to sterilization from all the pressure.

Love the Ergo and it got really good reviews.  Hope that helps GL!

  • Ergo, all the way. Distributes weight better and can be used longer.
