  • DH said the first night, but not the following nights.  He would stay until I fell asleep other nights.

  • he stayed all 3 nights

  • Yeah, my husband stayed the whole time we were in the hospital. He was able to take a week and a half off of work.

  • DH wasn't able to stay the first night because there were no private rooms available.  (DS was a scheduled section on March 17th, but because of the supermoon and the shifting of the earth on its axis {according to the nurses, a very real phenomenon that causes more births} the hospital was overflowing and we were almost sent home.)  After being at the hospital for 5 hours "waiting" to see if they'd have room/time for my section I started having very weak contractions and they were forced to fit me in, since DS was breech, a vaginal birth would've been too dangerous (with the skill level of the OB's in practice at my hospital).

On the 2nd and 3rd nights, DH did stay as I was moved to private.  I heard though that I was lucky, there were girls who wanted private rooms that were in ward rooms waiting for private to open!

  • He stayed the first night but I sent him home the second. We have animals and although we had various people coming to let them out frequently and to feed them, we thought it would be best for him to spend some time and sleep with them. (they're very spoiled) we didn't want to rock their world too much. He left the hospital at 10 pm and was back by 7am. I would do it again that way too in the future.
Baby, you've got the sort of eyes that tell me tales...

  • I was in the hospital for 4 nights (had a slow induction) and he was with me the entire time. SIL stayed at our house and took care of the pets. I would not have been okay with him leaving.

  • Since it was our first and I've never stayed in the hospital for anything, he stayed both nights. It was nice because he was able to help take care of LO when he was in our room.  He changed diapers and was able to get the nurse when I was upset about LO not latching (he was mad because he wanted milk and mama didn't have any yet!).

  • He stayed, but I wouldn't say he slept.  Not that I did either.

  • DH stayed the whole time with me. I think he was only gone a total of 3-4 hours the whole time.

This. My guess is that most DH's stayed but not all. Some people just don't like hospitals. Is it possible he was scared? Either way, I'm sorry that your DH wasn't there!

  • I was admitted in labor at 7pm and delivered via c-section at 10am. He stayed that night (obviously) but left from 4am until 5:45am to take care of our dog. Each subsequent he left by 8pm and returned by 8ish am. We had discussed this in advance though and I knew he wouldn't be staying overnight. I've had lots of experience with hospital stays, we weren't going to have LO room in so that I could get as much sleep as possible, and we wanted our dog's schedule to stay as "normal" as possible so he also left once during the day every day to take him out.

  • Yes, all 3 nights. He even cooked meals ahead of time so he wouldn't have to order hospital food or leave me. I thought it was ridiculous at the time but know that I think of it, it worked out great. You shouldn't dwell on it now, it's over and done with.
  • My DH slept all 3 nights at the hospital on the couch! I love him for being there. I definitely would not have wanted to be by myself during those first few nights.

  • I told my husband to stay at home because his parents had come down and were staying at our house for the night.  I had been in labor for two days before delivering and hadn't had any sleep, and my husband hadn't gotten a whole lot of sleep during that time, so I wanted him to be comfortable for a few hours of sleep and not on a couch.  Luke was born at 9:08 p.m., and my husband probably left the hospital at about 1:30 a.m.  He didn't realize that he could come and go as he pleased, so he didn't come back until noon the next day, after he and his parents had breakfast.  His parents left later that afternoon, and he stayed with me that night.  I've had a few stays in the hospital, so hospitals don't bother me.  I actually enjoyed the one-on-one time with my new baby boy.

What I can't believe is that my husband worked while I was in labor.  I started having contractions Sunday evening and ended up in the hospital in the middle of the night because they were close together, but they spaced back out, and I was sent home.  That Monday, I told my husband he should go to work even though I was still having contractions.  Overnight that night, they got really bad again, and I still had him go to work Tuesday.  At about noon, I had to call him to come take me to the hospital though, and Luke was born that night.  I'm really proud of myself for going through that much labor at home alone.  It saved up vacation days for my husband that we can now use for something fun.

  • yeah I figured most stayed, this is one of things I look back on and regret not making him stay!  I had a c section and they left baby with me, I didn't sleep that night for the 2nd night in a row because I was so freaked out about baby choking as he had a little scare earlier that night- my sister did stay with me but I didn't even really wake her up to help me- I probably would have been the same with DH.  He did sleep with me the next 2 nights.... complaining the whole time about how uncomfortable it was- then I told him to go home the last night...

My DBF stayed the first night while I got induced, but then after I had the baby we decided that it would be best if he slept at home with DD.

I actually got upset bc he cut off the hospital bands that they put on him. Which meant I had to do everything, and when I did take a bath LO had to have a nurse stay with her, or she had to be rolled into the bathroom with me. I was really mad, I think he could had kept a stupid plastic bracelet on for a few days if I had to, it wasnt going to kill him.

  • Nope. In the hospital where I stayed the partner can only stay overnight if you are in a private room. I sent him home at 8pm the night DD was born. One of us needed to get some sleep!

DH stayed for 3 nights. I had a c/s and made him go home after the first three - he has a bad back and the pull-out chair thing was killing him.

  • he stayed the whole time, I hate hospitals and I dont think it even crossed his mind to go home, plus we had so many people coming to visit that brought food so we were good, Iam glad he stayed.

I was in the hospital for 6 nights, and DH stayed over all 6 nights. That includes my 2 induction nights that he had to sleep in a reclining chair because they don't have the pull-outs in the labor and delivery rooms.

  • I told DH to go home.  I was in labor overnight and had the baby in the morning and he was exhausted.  I knew that he would never get any sleep on the recliner in my room, especially with them bringing in the baby to eat every three hours.  Once we went home, neither of us was going to be getting any sleep, so I figured it would be a good idea for at least one of us to be well-rested going into that!

  • No, b/c partners are not allowed to stay over in most hospitals here in NZ.

DH stayed the first night but fell asleep within an hour of me giving birth!  I kept trying to wake him but he just kept falling asleep.  Labor must have really taken it out of him.Hmm  I'm still trying to get over it!

  • Not this time.  The "bed" looked really uncomfortable and I wanted him to go home and check on our son (Grandma stayed with him, but I still worry a little)  Honestly I didn't really mind because there isn't much he can do in the middle of the night anyway.

  • DH didn't stay any nights with DS or DD. I wanted him to but it didn't make sense to board the dog when we live 10 minutes from the hospital.
