Stay at Home Moms

If you weaned from BM to WM at a year

how did you do it?  I know I still have a few more months but I am starting to get nervous about it.  My son doesn't drink out of a sippy cup and will only drink bottles in front of his baby einstein videos.  I know I do not need to wean at a year but I would like to have my body to myself for a few months before I get pregnant again.  Should I be working much harder on the sippy cup with him?  I am asking this board because if you stayed at home and breastfed I imagine your LOs did not get bottles often either.

Re: If you weaned from BM to WM at a year

  • I weaned ds#1 from bm straight to cow's milk in a sippy cup.  I started before he was a year with a little water and/or juice in the sippy cup to get him used to it.  By the time he was a year, it wasn't a problem.  I just replaced one nursing at a time with the sippy cup with cow's milk.  I did use a sippy cup that was sort of a bottle hybrid.  He didn't take bottles often, but I figured they'd be more like a breast/bottle, which is what he was used to.

So yeah I would say, find a sippy cup that he likes and start giving him a little juice or water in it now.  It will make things easier down the road.

Cups/bottles similar to what we used:

  • I pumped and gave DS bottles.  (At the time it just seemed easier.)

I tried BM in sippies and that was a definite no-go.  I waited until he was 1 and then started doing 25% WM/75%BM, then 50/50, then 75/25, then just WM.

One day I finally got tired of trying to do the sippy vs. bottle thing and I just got packed up the bottles.  When they're thirsty, they'll drink!

I also have different sippies for water/juice (about 2oz of juice and 6oz water) and milk.  The ones I use for milk tend to leak a little bit so he only gets those with meals when he's sitting down.  The water/juice sippies he can carry around with him or keep in in play room to drink.

  • DS refused to wean and would not take a sip cup at all, no amount of effort worked.  I ended up leaving him for 5 days and went to Mexico.  He weaned then just fine.  My mom said he didn't even fight it once I was gone and he never tried to BF again.

  • I introduced a cup w/water and really watered down juice around 8 mo or so. I would give it to them during meal time, and for about 2 mo they more or less just played with it. As I began to wean, around 11 mo I started w/milk. (DD1 on cow, DD2 has a milk allergy so vanilla flavored soy) I used this cup with both girls successfully dropping a nursing session w/the milk instead. It was great for their little hands and made for easy clean-up.  I was surprised that both girls really took to their respective milks w/little to no fanfare.

  • Just did it cold turkey.  BM to formula to (start sippy cup) whole milk to 2%, all by their first year.

  • we started out with a sippy for water while he was still BFing.  Then at 14-15months he kind of weaned himself anyway.  He never really got a bottle (unless I pumped because we were leaving him, but I never left him overnight until after a year lol).  We started using sippies for everything.  We did the same with weaning from the sippy to a regular cup...a few months before his second bday we started offering the cup.  Now that's all he uses :)
  • It was not even an issue. She got good at sippys around 10 or   11 months and I introduced wm at 11 months. At 12 months I dropped down to four nursings from 6 or 7 and it was not an issue. I actually tried formula in the Sippy at 11 months and she refused it, but she took to wm right away.

  • Great question and great answers!  I've been worried about this, too, though I just want to start a gradual weaning and don't mind nursing for up to 18 months.  Earlier would be fine, too, though!

  • I introduced a straw sippy cup at 6 months (with water). By 7 months, my kids could drink out of a straw cup. I bypassed sippy cups alltogether.

At 1 years old, I would drop 1 nursing session and replace it with a straw cup of milk. Then, 2-3 weeks later, I dropped another nursing session, etc. until I no longer was nursing.

My kids didn't take to the transition that well. They really only drank milk when they were fully weaned. My ped wasn't concerned at all since they were getting enough calcium through yogurt and cheese each day.

  • DD wouldn't take a bottle so we went straight to a sippy cup.  We got the tommy tippee cup that was designed for 4 months and up.

We started at around 6 months with pumped BM so I could get away for more then a few hours when I needed to get out.  When we started transitioning her to whole milk and water we used this cup.  It took her awhile to get used to it but worked for us.

    Good Luck.
