Does anyone CIO?

I feel like a horrible mom for writing this but is anyone else letting LO CIO from time to time? I know they really aren't able to self soothe until about 3 mo old but I've noticed in the past week or two that if DS is sleepy (and fed and dry and all that other good stuff) and doesn't want to go down and I let him cry he is usually passed out in a few minutes. Don't get me wrong, I hate those few minutes but I almost feel like I'm doing more harm by picking him up and restimulating him because then he gets overly tired and fights sleep. I never let it go on for more than 5 mins or so but it seems to really be doing the trick as far as getting DS some good nap time. Flame away if you must but anyone else?

Re: Does anyone CIO?

  • I guess we kind of do. My DD almost always has a fussy period right before going to bed in the evening. She's tired (yawning and rubbing her eyes) and she's fed, dry, etc, but she still cries and then passes out. We used to spend at least an hour in this fussy period. My DH walked around the house with her and "managed" the pacifier (half the time she loves it, the other half she hates it.) One night, we just decided to try putting her down and it's been working. She will usually cry or fuss for a few minutes, then she'll stop and look around, try to eat her hands, and then she goes right to sleep. I think that being up with her actually added to the problem. It has been working for us.

  • I'll usually let DD cry for a few minutes before I go back into her room. Her "I'm tired but fighting it" cry is different from her "I'm gassy/uncomfortable/etc" cry so I'm fine with letting her cry if it's the first because I know it'll end in a few minutes. If it's the latter cry then I do go in because letting her cry will do nothing but stress me and DH out.

  • Don't feel horrible! My pedi recommends starting out 5 minute CIO intervals starting at 6 weeks. If after 5 minutes LO isn't soothed or sleeping, pick him/her up. DS isn't 6 weeks yet so we haven't started but we will be in the evenings when we know he's fine and just fussing before sleep.

  • Thanks for posting this. You definitely won't get any flames from me.

I haven't really tried this yet, but this week DS has started this whole "fighting sleep" thing during the day. He gets fussy, and I can tell he wants a nap. Sometimes he'll start dozing while I'm nursing him but as soon as I go to put him down he starts crying again.

When he does this, I've been picking him up and trying to console him (to no avail). Next time, I'm going to try to put him down and let him CIO for like 5 min. and see if he'll fall asleep.

  • There have been a few afternoons when I have done a little CIO out of frustration. These are usually the afternoons where DD has been fed, burped, changed and very tired. I've already gone up to soothe her 3+ times and I know she is just overtired and fighting sleep. I need a few minutes to myself so I usually let her cry for about 2 min tops, and if she doesn't stop start the soothing process all over again.

  • You bet....more for me than him.  The only time I can't is when my five year old is home and he just wants quiet.
  • A few minutes is not CIO.  I let DD cry for a few minutes while I finish a shower or go to the bathroom.  It also depends on what type of cry they are doing.  What about the times when you are in the car and can't pull over and they are crying.  A few minutes definitely isn't CIO.

CIO is more like letting them scream and freak out for over 5-10 minutes.

  • I know when lo is crying because he's fighting sleep and I let him cry himself in my arms.  He usually falls asleep on DH or I and when he's limp we move him.  I don't do too many soothing techniques other than switching his position and rocking a little because I don't want him to get stimulated but I'll put him on his belly on my arm and he usually falls asleep within a few mins

  • If he's totally freaking out, I go to him ASAP (occasionally I get out of the shower to find that he's woken up and in full meltdown mode).  But I've gotten better at deciphering his types of cries.  As PP's have said, sometimes he's just overtired and I know that if I let him go for a few minutes (5 or less), that he'll fall asleep.  Other times he's just fussing and if I'm in the middle of making dinner or something, I'll just let him go for awhile.  If his crying escalates, then I'll stop what I'm doing and comfort him.  Otherwise, I figure he's fine for a little while.

I will be honest... I look forward to when he's a little older and I can let him CIO.  I've been nursing him to sleep every night and it will be nice to get to a place where I can put him in the crib drowsy and he'll go to sleep.

  • i have to do this with my 3 month old daycare baby!  she is a very intense, hard baby and she only likes to be with her mom.  so she cries or fusses most of the time she is awake!  she won't even take a bottle for me, or a binky.  won't let me soothe her either so there is absolutely NOTHING i can do to help her stop crying.  so i either hold a crying baby all day(along with taking care of my own LO) or i let her CIO in the swing!  fun fun fun!!!!
