Babies: 6 - 9 Months

So my kid is sick... (long)

again...at 1am I woke up to crying so I went in to check on him, I assumed he lost his binky. He had puked everywhere. As I was trying to clean him, it just kept coming up.  This happened 3 times between 1am and 6am.  At 7:15 he puked up his entire bottle.

Everytime I call the pedis office they don't think he needs to come in-he has no fever, he's not lethargic. There is a bug going around so I'm sure that's what it is.

My mom came and watched him today and he didn't throw up at all. As soon as I got home he started projectile vomiting all over the floor.  I called again and they still don't think he needs to come in. Now I just noticed he has what I can only describe as bumps/bites/something like that on his arm and leg.

WTF is going on? Do I take him to ER or just wait for an appointment tomorrow morning? He's still smiling and laughing and happy, just puking and not eating very much and having diharrea (sorry if that's spelled wrong-I've been up since 1am and worked all day!)

  • Poor little guy.  That sux!  Did you call the pedi again after you noticied the bumps?  We just brought DD in for an ear infection and she did mention that colds and viruses with rashes were common, but I would still call to be safe.

I didn't recall (I had literally just hung up with them when I noticed them). My mom was still here and she was a peds nurse for many years and she thought they were bug bites.

I planned to bring him in tomorrow morning anyway, but I'm just...ugh between the no sleep and the projectile vom shower I got when I got home, I'm just out of it and needed bumpie opinions. Maybe I better call back??

  • My Pedi takes walk-ins so I would utilize that. If he didn't, I would prob just wait for an appt in the morning. That's as long as she doesn't have a fever and is active. That seems to be the two things they really worry about. If he sleeps tonight, I would feel him every couple hours to make he doesn't have a fever. I hope he feels better! The vomiting is so awful! I also hope you get some rest!

I would probably call the pedi again and see what they say.  Is there an urgent care clinic nearby?  That's always an option as well.  It might help ease your mind if someone could actually see him.  I hope he's feeling better soon!
It's not really near by, but it's not super far either (we live out in the sticks)

His temp is 98.8 (so pretty much perfect) and he's sleeping now. He just won't eat/drink anything except formula, but he doesn't keep that down. We've tried giving him pedialyte and water but he is only wanting formula.

  • AW JKat, I'm so sorry Ryan is sick. That really sucks. I would definitely call your pedi back. I think I would demand to be seen, especially with the bumps on his skin now.

I really hope he gets over whatever he has quickly. And I hope tonight is better for you guys.

Poor guy and poor you! I'm sorry he's so sick!

I would wait until tomorrow - if your mom thinks they're bug bites (and does she think they're related to the vomiting? I wouldn't think so but I'm not a nurse) then it's just a bad coincidence.

If he's not acting "off" (other than the puking) I would think it's just a stomach bug. It honestly sounds EXACTLY like how Charlie was when we all had that awful bug. Just beware: You'll probably get it. Sad

  • My mom is an RN and I usually ask her opinion on these types of things. If your Mom thinks it's OK to wait until the morning then I would. No fever is definitely a good sign.

I hope he feels better soon!!

  • I'm sorry chick! That sucks! I hope he feels better. If your mom wasn't worried, I don't think I'd take him to the ER. Just call again.

  • Aw hugs to you and Ry :(   Sorry he's sick.  As long as he's his happy self which it sounds like, I'd try not to worry (easier said than done).  I'm glad you're going in tomorrow though.  If things get worse overnight I wouldn't hesitate to call the on-call doc but I always try to avoid the ER.

I hope you get some rest tonight.  Aw man I feel for you :(

  • Hang in there! Feel better Ry!

  • Oh man, I'm so sorry Ryan is sick. I would definitely call the pedi and insist he get an appointment, even if they do tell you it's just a virus and has to pass.
  • Last week, my LO had something that sounds like this - it lasted a week, literally. I took her to the Dr. at the tail end, and he said the GI Bug could last 5-7 days, but that once it was over and done with, she should be set for life.

Here's how we tried to control it

    1. we gave her small bottle feedings - yes it meant we had to feed her more often, but it helped keeping the puking at bay.

    2. we gave her ice in her mesh feeder - to keep her hydrated AND entertained. We also gave her apple (constipating to counteract the diarrhea).

    3. a little plain rice cereal to help constipate her. If you have to add a little apple to get R to take it, that's OK too. I did about 1 tbsp of cereal and 1/4 tub of apple.

    4. for about a day, we diluted her formula, on recommendation of the Dr. I didn't like doing it, but the reality was once we took that measure she didn't puke again.

Just so you know, once she was 24 hours diarrhea-free, she was technically better, she still didn't act like herself. Think about how you feel after you've had a bad stomach. It was about 48 hours after being diarrhea-free that I had my little girl back.

Oh and one final thing - it might've just been our luck, but for two days AFTER she was better, she had trouble pooping...getting back to her normal cycles.

Hope this helps - and sorry for the book.

  • TopBirdSix-thanks for all the info! We've been trying to dod small frequent feedings but homeboy SCREAMS if he doesn't eat as much as he wants. But I'll keep trying-and I will give the ice in the mesh feeder a shot-that could help him!!
